MO: Bill To Prevent Gun Confiscations Advances

Not a done deal though I don't know how any sane person could oppose a bill preventing the confiscation of lawfully owned firearms during an emergency. From the Belleville News-Democrat:

People could not have their guns taken away during an emergency under a bill that won first-round approval Wednesday from the Senate.

The legislation spells out that no government or individual can decide in an emergency to take away guns and ammunition from those who lawfully possess them.

"It's not adding any rights. It's just preventing the rights from being taken away from them," said Sen. Kevin Engler, R-Farmington.

The impetus for the bill is the response to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in August 2005.

And yet there was dissent over the bill from someone obviously NOT sane:

But one senator said the legislation goes too far and proposed various failed amendments that would have added restrictions to gun owners' rights.

"You have set up here an absolute right as broad as the ocean," said Sen. Joan Bray, D-St. Louis. "I don't think guns need to be such a big part of problem solving."

No, they haven't set up a right, they are protecting a right. Big difference and if a state senator doesn't realize that then she needs a class in "remedial Constitution" or something like that.

Joan Bray... 2A supporters in MO are quite well aware of her, and her anti-2A position. Nothing new. She votes for every gun control issue that comes up, and against every pro-freedom issue.

In the current session, we're trying to get rid of the MO 'Permit to acquire' law... she's against it, we're trying to get a solid 'castle doctrine' law passed... she's against it. She authored the one anti-2A bill we're fighting against... a so-called 'safe storage' bill requiring us to keep defensive weapons out of reach in case of emergency.

Just for laughs... the NRA convention is in her district this weekend :)

Unfortunately its not only politicians that don't get it. I was in Springfield, IL for IGOLD. One of the IL State Rifle Assoc people was on stage as part of our pre-lobbying briefing. At one point she said something about working to convince the legislature "to give us the right to carry ..." At which point I interrupted from the audience "We have the right. They need to stop infringing upon it."

When even our activists don't get it right when speaking in public, we'll never get the majority of politicians to take the meaning to heart.
They don't give us rights.
The Constitution does not give us rights.
Our rights are inherent by what we are.

Chris

Actually, the NRA Annual Meeting is next month - April 12 - 14. I know because I'm going.

And you didn't mention one of Bray's 'best' bills from last year that would have outlawed any gun that wasn't in an 'approved' color. She claimed it was to cut down on kids getting shot for pulling toy guns on people (in her district, usually in the commission of a felony). Of course the way she wrote the thing it would have banned camo shotguns.

Suffice it to say that I belive Jeff adequately described her.

I'd be willing to bet that Joan Bray and Baltimore Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke are related.

Or most certainly know each other.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
