Proximity Laws Against Guns?

I've always felt that laws (like the federal one) that prohibit the possession of firearms in the vicinity of something (such as a school) are misguided since they can instantly make a criminal out of someone who didn't know there was something (such as a school) nearby. So I have a tough time with this ban in Lawrence, Kansas:

Mixing guns and bars in Lawrence will now result in jail time, the city commission decided Tuesday night.

The commission instituted mandatory jail sentences for those who bring guns within 200 feet of drinking establishments, but it put a proposed entertainment licensing system on hold after attendees voiced concerns.

City law already prohibited firearms near or in the premises of drinking establishments but did not require jail sentences.

Commissioner Dennis “Boog” Highberger said the threat of jail sentences would do more to discourage people from bringing weapons near bars.

So... If I live in Kansas, have a CCW permit, drive through Lawrence and decide to stop for a bite to eat -- Oh, there's a restaurant! -- and happen to park within 200 feet of a tavern, I'm now a criminal? What's up with that?

Hell, it sounds like just driving past a bar could put you violation. How the hell can you get anywhere, if you can't drive past a bar, school, library, gov't building, etc.?

... and ignorance of a law is no defence...

It sounds like apartheid south Africa where people were arreasted for pulling over to look at a road atlas:

"come this way "boy", you are 50cm inside a whites only area without a pass..."

Someone looking to commit cold-blooded murder in a bar will surely be thwarted by a measure such as this.

I'm surprised the idiots "south of the border" from me in Mass. haven't tried something similar by claiming that caffeine and guns are a bad combination. They wouldn't want all those jittery people packing heat.

"No handguns within 200 feet of a Dunkin Donuts."

Instant statewide gun ban.

If you go over to http://www.ksccw.com and check out whichever version of the forum is up (they're trying to move to a new server) there's been discussion of this.

It (apparently) excludes CCW permit holders. It's intended to fight the usual sort of idiots who go out drinking and shooting. Lawrence doesn't have an NBA franchise but they do have the Jayhawks.

Lawrence, btw, is the apparently obligatory in each state 'uber-liberal' town inflicted on Kansas.

At this time the Kansas legislature is working on a bill (H2528) that would negate this. The bill works to allow us Kansas citizens to exercise our new CCH rights without subordinate government entities interfering too much. I think liberal Lawrence is just thumbing their nose at the state legislature.

There are similar laws regarding drugs near schoolss "to protect the children". Police are known to tail adult dealer on the way to deliver to an adult customer, and pull them over when they enter the enhanced penalty school zone.

Sounds great, so they are lowering the drinking age to ten so they can say,"Its for the children". ;}

Well ... there is an answer. For all those who travel through Lawrence, choose not to patronize any retailers, etc. in that city. More importantly, make sure that you tell at least twenty other people that you've decided to withhold your patronage because you cannot support the extra-Constitutional municipal by-law.

It might appear to be just a drop in the libtard ocean but it will have an effect. As more people join this approach ... and talk about it ... the overall impact becomes truly enormous.

There was a retailer in my city that decided to omit training their counter staff. I was dissatisfied with the lack of service. As a trainer, I had classes of 15-25 who heard my little tale whenever we discussed eye contact, body language, etc. I would work it into my presentation.

Eventually, it worked ... although I don't take full credit for their closing the doors.

Apply the power of your discretionary income and deny it to the merchants of Lawrence. A single drop of water ... repeated enough times ... will cut through rock.

Regards,
George

Quoting Bruce:

"No handguns within 200 feet of a Dunkin Donuts."

Would there be an exemption for LEO's? Think of all the surly cops not getting their doughnut fix...

Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
