More on Bill Richardson

I've already covered his voting record on gun control rather extensively and he comes out as pretty good in my book except for the one lapse regarding the AWB. Follow that link for details.

Anyway, I found this article rather interesting. Here are a couple quotes:

Not only did Bill Richardson get a seasoned Democratic operative to lead his Nevada team, he got one who knows how to fire a rifle.

It's sometimes hard for transplanted Easterners and Californians to recognize why the Mountain West has been such a consistent red. (And I'm not talking about UNLV).

When you travel outside Las Vegas and talk to voters in Elko, Lincoln and Nye counties, you find plenty who could go for Democrats if the candidate was fairly fiscally conservative and "doesn't try to take our guns."

[...regarding a skeet shoot next month hosted by Elko Democrats...]

If Roberta Lange, Richardson's new [Nevada] state director, decides to drop by, watch out. In addition to being a highly regarded Democratic operative, she's also a former rifle champion.

Richardson, the New Mexico governor with the best resume to be president, knows the West. Democrats rightly believe the path to the White House in 2008 runs through the West, where voters like their guns and open space almost as much as they dislike taxes and government intrusion.

I've said before that I'm not at all married to the Republican Party. I still have a lot more to learn about Gov. Richardson but I will tell you this: If the 2008 election were held tomorrow and Bill Richardson was the Democratic candidate and the Republican candidate was either Giuliani, McCain, or Romney, I would vote for Richardson. I suspect there are a Whole Lot of libertarians like me out there who would do the same.

I would suggest to the press, the DNC, and to lefty bloggers that they stop annointing Hillary or Obama (both viruntly anti-2nd Amendment) as the done-deal and take a closer look at Richardson. It could clear a path to the White House in what are normally rather "red" areas of the country.

I've also said that while a good voting record on gun rights (and against gun control) are a requirement for any candidate that I will consider, there are, naturally, a few other issues I care about to a lesser degree but that I track nonetheless. Brownback and Hunter and Thompson (Republicans) are way to far to the right for my tastes.

I will never go Democrat unless the platform changes. Do you think Dean would have been pro gun if elected president considering his record in VT? No way. Richardson may be pro gun now, but just let the party get ahold of him and that will change real fast.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
