Criminals Win in Montana

Caving to pressure from Democrats and police groups, the Montana House has reversed course and voted down a "Stand Your Ground" bill. From the Billings Gazette:

The House, under pressure from law enforcement groups, reversed itself on a proposed law that would let residents brandish a firearm if they felt threatened.

The House rejected the measure on a 50-48 vote Friday, a week after first endorsing it on a 57-43 vote.

The proposal also would have clarified law to specify that gun owners don't have to retreat from a would-be assailant before shooting in self defense.

Critics argued that it would give criminals new legal loopholes and make the streets more dangerous for police.

So if you're attacked by a mutant in Montana, just run away -- if you can. And if you can't, just kiss your sorry ass goodbye. Once again, the legislators are more concerned for criminal thugs than with the safety of the law abiding citizen.

Need more proof? The Montana Senate just voted to abolish the death penalty. And yes, folks can disagree about the death penalty and about the possibility of an innocent person being executed because of poor or corrupt police work, but I believe it needs to be on the table as an option.

it's possible that this paticular law was poorly written.

I don't understand why the law enforcement groups would be against a law that would allow residents to brandish a firearm if they are being threatened by a criminal. What if retreat isn't possible? Law Enforcement has no legal obligation to protect any individual member of society. If you dial 911, and they don't show up, you're SOL. You could sue, but you won't win. And if you're in a position that you can dial 911 it will probably be too late before they show up to do you any good. There are millions of us who, each day, take on the responsibility of providing for the safety of ourselves and our loved ones should someone wish to do violence against us. What are the fears that the law enforcement community has when it comes to law abiding citizens defending themselves?

Angel Elf, because most of them are cowards. They don't give a shit what happens to you or your children or your wife. Remember it was law enforcement that stood outside Columbine for a very long time, until all the shooting was over.

Those are the people they recruit now.

It must be that one of Montana's biggest landowners (Ted Turner) called in a few favors.

Actually, the bill has passed the house, and been transmitted to the Senate. It was 're-considered' the day after it was shot down 48 to 50--It looked to me like 2 of the reps who were absent and didn't vote on 2/23 asked for a do-over. On the 24th, the vote was 51-47 in favor. On Feb 27 it passed the house 57-42 and was sent to the senate.

Unfortunately, the MT senate is Dem controlled, and it probably will die there.

Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
