Romney: The 2nd Amendment Two-Step

Concerning Mitt Romney's love of gun control, well, I've already discussed it here because -- there IS a paper trail. Read that post again for some history on his support of draconian gun control, Massachusetts style.

Today though, Romney appeared on ABC News This Week with George Stephenopoulos. You want to witness someone tap-dancing around the issue of gun control and gun rights? From the transcript:

Stephanopoulos: Let's talk about guns. You were supportive of the Brady bill, the handgun waiting period, in the past. You signed an assault weapon ban into law and you said, in the past, "I don't line up with the NRA."

Now, you…

Mitt Romney: Well, on that issue.

Stephanopoulos: Now you're a member of the NRA.

Mitt Romney: Yes, and I know the NRA does not support an assault weapon ban. So I don't line up on that particular issue with the NRA, either does President Bush. He likewise says he supported an assault weapon ban.

Today we don't have the Brady bill because we have instantaneous background checks. That's no longer a operative or needed measure.

But I'm a strong proponent of Second Amendment rights. I believe people, under our Constitution, have the right to bear arms.

We have a gun in one of our homes. It's not owned by me, it's owned by my son, but I've always considered it sort of mine.

Stephanopoulos: When did you join the NRA?

Mitt Romney: Within the last year and I signed up for a lifelong membership. I think they're doing good things and I believe in supporting the right to bear arms.

I've been a hunter all my life, not frequently, but as a boy, when I worked on a ranch in Idaho, we used to go out shooting rabbits, because they were eating all the barley, and I got pretty good with a single shot .22 rifle, and been quail hunting more recently.

So I'm a hunter and believe in Second Amendment rights, but I also believe that assault weapons are not needed in the public population.

Yes, folks, it's the Second Amendment Shuffle!

Romney's been a hunter all his life. Well, okay, when he was a boy he shot some rabbits.

There's a gun in one of his homes but it isn't his.

He supports the NRA except for their position on gun rights.

By-golly, though, he's now taken out a lifetime NRA membership just in time for the republican primaries. Someone should have told him that there are term limits on the presidency. Too bad there aren't any term limits on pandering.

"assault weapons"

Fairly meaningless phraseology. A fist can be considered an "assault weapon" under the laws of various states, including Massachusetts. Shoes, gloves, stockings...

I've survived the Romney administration here in the Peoples Commonwealth and can't see why anybody is taking this guy seriously. Not only is his wrong on basic human rights issues (including RKBA), but as governor and head of the Republican party in the state, he did nothing to promote or even support his party. It's in worse shape than when he took office.

His only qualification that I can tell is the classic basic qualification for a CEO, he looks good in a suit.

"So I'm a hunter and believe in Second Amendment rights, but I also believe that assault weapons are not needed in the public population."

Sounds like our new friend Jim Zumbo

Time for the old "Goose hunt" trick. By the way, I really think that Bush realized that there would be no "extension" of the SEMI AUTOMATIC RIFLE ban brought to him. "They" were all ready with legislation to ban just about that shoots along with gun show bans, Etc. Jack.

I was happy to see Wayne giving this idiot an educational tour of the Shot Show in Florida, but if anyone thinks that is going to trick gun owners into thinking he's actually supports the Bill of Rights....think again.

Glad to see him getting exposed to the NRA and American Culture, but...he's just another dumb-ass politician in a suit.

"So I'm a hunter and believe in Second Amendment rights, but I also believe that assault weapons are not needed in the public population."

And we don't need this Massachusetts clown in public service either.

He is an idiot. He was governor and wants to be president and doesn't know a damn thing about American civics, liberty, law, history or the English language?

My aching ass. He is the hollow man.

Didn't Jim Zumbo just get his ass kicked for making similar statements? Compare and contrast:

Romney said:So I'm a hunter and believe in Second Amendment rights, but I also believe that assault weapons are not needed in the public population.

Zumbo said: I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles.

Two idiots that don't even pretend to understand the Constitution of the Nation they live in, and one of them wants to be your President. I just wish that Romney had gotten the same blogswarm that Zumbo received.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
