What Snow?

Well, okay, so it's not like I live on the eastern shore of Superior but we got a bit of snow here in Vermont during yesterday's Valentine's Day Blizzard. This is me after I dug out my car. I propped the camera on the trunk of the car and used a delayed shutter.

Don't know if it shows but the level of snow is equal between my driveway and the next -- that isn't a "plow drift." Up past my waist... What always impresses me is that even though the storm didn't end until about four hours ago, the main roads and highways are clear and easily drivable if you keep it down to about 40mph. One thing about Vermont -- the road crews really know how to deal with snow, and quickly.

"Up past my waist"? Thats nothing. I can remember the snow up to my neck. I was 4 at the time! Jack.

Just more "inconvenient truth" about global warming, climate change, (insert cause du jour here)yada, yada, yada. At least I made a livable wage while I was cleaning up the driveway and walks three times.

Isn't it amazing the difference in how areas react to snow?

Vermont, the upper Plains, presumable Maine - they get three feet of snow and go 'Huh. Better get to work.' and life goes on. Get just a little further South on the map and 2 inches at least snarls traffic and quite possibly shuts down the region. Heck, here in Kansas City the rumour of snow seems to shut down the roads.

I cannot believe all of this snow in the United States. Did you have to shovel your rooftops?

Posted by: Nels Lindahl at February 15, 2007 01:18 PM

Nels--it depends on the region.

At certain points along the shore of Lake Superior (check this page out to get a sense of how much snow can fall along that lakeshore) it is fairly common for houseowners to clean snow off of their roofs at least once a year.

However, other areas of the State of Michigan rarely get more than 2 feet of snow in a winter. Those people have almost never shoveled snow off of their roofs.

And then, there are the Americans for whom an inch of snow is surprising news. (Florida comes to mind.)

Jeff--like the picture. Are there any snowmobilers or skiers taking advantage of the snow?

Nels: Most Northern New England roofs are pitched steep enough to not need it but for others (and for one small area of mine) a roof rake is standard equipment in the shed, next to the shovel and plow...

Karrde: This is the first decent snow we've had in a long while. I'm guessing that about 1/4 of the people where I work are "out" today, sledding or skiing.

My daughter just called and she is ready for school to reopen. She and her husband have been to work without any problem, but the school has closed for two days now. She is about to kill my grandchildren. Well maybe not kill them, just make them wish they were dead.

I didn't mention, they live in Vermont also.

My first day in Alaska I was on the way to get the rental car, with 10" of snow on the ground since I landed the night before, and temperatures in the high teens.

The kids not only had school, but they had outdoor recess.

In January 1985, down here in San Antonio, we set a record with 13.5 inches. Heck, even 1 inch closes the highways and schools. We don't get snow every year and our annual average of freezing rain, sleet and snow is under 1 inch.
