More Pro-2A Republicans Enter Race

Not that I've ever heard of him but... From the Logan Herald-Observer (IA):

John Cox, 51, is the former president of the Cook County Republican party and helped with Jack Kemp's presidential run in 1988. Currently sitting on the board of the USO and FireWorks for Kids Foundation, Cox is a CPA, lawyer and investment advisor who owns five companies that deal in real estate investments, accounting, law and brokerage.

He recently passed through Harrison County, Iowa - his second trip here in less than a year - and sat down with Publisher John Beaudoin to talk about his campaign and why he believes the Republican Party has lost its way.

Still don't know him. Anyway, I'll skip to the only thing that counts:

Q. Where do you stand on gun control?

A. I am a lifetime member of the NRA. In every state that has enacted conceal-carry, the crime rate has gone down. I think gun control is a waste of time. Washington, D.C. has the best gun control laws and the highest crime rate. I want our resources to go to prosecute criminals.

Actually, I'd say that Vermont has the best gun control laws -- none -- but that's just semantics. His heart is in the right place.

By the way, since several of you have mentioned that Texas Congressman Ron Paul is in the running, here's a link to some of his thoughts including this:

"Gun control often serves as a gateway to tyranny. Tyrants from Hitler to Mao to Stalin have sought to disarm their own citizens, for the simple reason that unarmed people are easier to control. Our Founders, having just expelled the British army, knew that the right to bear arms serves as the guardian of every other right. This is the principle so often ignored by both sides in the gun control debate. Only armed citizens can resist tyrannical government."
--Ron Paul

And also this from the Free Republic:

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) recently introduced a bill that would prevent the use of American tax dollars from being used by the United Nations to limit or prohibit the Second Amendment right to bear arms for U.S. citizens.

"The Right to Keep and Bear Arms Act of 2003," or H.R. 3125, was drafted out of a concern that Second Amendment rights would be infringed upon by international forces, such as the U.N.

Paul states in the text of the bill that "2,000,000 largely unarmed people are killed yearly by oppressive genocidal governments throughout the world."

The bill itself details several examples of U.N. attempts to restrict gun rights and to derail the U.S. Constitution since the early 1990s.

There! Never let it be said that I ignore the folks that big media does.

Jeff, I love your blog. I also miss you on the Cam Edwards show. What's gives, man?

Posted by: Wai at February 8, 2007 01:09 AM

Thanks, Wai.

When I first started doing my "Weekly Check on the Bias" reports here on Alphecca almost 4 1/2 years ago, there were far fewer "pro-gun" bloggers and none doing such media scrutiny in an organized way.

These days, everyone (including myself) do it on a daily basis so that a "Weekly" report is obsolete almost out of the gate, my commentary notwithstanding.

Last Summer, I realized this and also felt the pressure to produce such a large report was consuming the better part of one of my days off. Also, my SF blog novel was consuming a lot of time and (from a personal standpoint) far more creative.

There are only so many ways to respond to a typical anti-gunner's argument and I found myself in repetition all the time.

When Cam's show moved to 9pm - Midnight (my time) I decided that I really didn't want to stay up that late to do the segment. I tend to go to bed rather early so that I can get a jump on the news each morning and blog about it. You'll notice that 90% of my posts are written early in the morning.

I miss doing my weekly segment on Cam's NRA News but I'm so busy at my regular job that time-off is precious to me now that I'm in my fifties...

I think when Cox says the "best" gun control laws, he means that DC has the most rigorous, strictist ones. Despite that, they have the most crime.

Ron Paul is a nice guy, but as a Libertarian, his liberal social values don't mesh with many social conservatives - and they will be the ones voting!

Thanks Jeff, I've never heard of John Cox, despite living (roughly) in the area. I'm glad Ron Paul has some traits uncommon amongst libertarians; the ability to get elected, and the ability to explain things without sounding crazy (though I'm sure his words will be twisted beyond recognition in any press coverage he will get, assuming he even makes it that far).

Note: Comments close down on posts after seven days and then
the comment input form disappears.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
