Marion Barry: Drop DC Handgun Ban...(?!)

No, really!

D.C. Councilmember Marion Barry said he wants to suspend the city's handgun control law.

Barry has proposed to suspend the law for 90 days, saying that would allow citizens who want a gun in their homes to legally register them and make it easier for police to trace guns used in crimes.

The council member also said he wants to stiffen penalties for any illegal use of handguns. Under the bill, some penalties for gun crimes could double from five to 10 years or more.

The District's gun ban has been on the books since 1977.

Barry said he would not own a gun, but others want them.

"Let's not only make our city safer, but people ought to feel safer," said Barry. "Now I'm opposed to any citizen having a gun in his or her house, but there are some citizens who, they ought to have these guns registered, so we should accommodate that."

Sounds like "ropey-dopey" to me. Suspend the law for 90 days, folks register their handguns, law goes back into effect, guns confiscated.

Barry says he wants to increase penalties for illegal use of guns. But a couple years ago, when he was robbed at gun point by two thugs, he said that he wouldn't prosecute them. Maybe he's still on drugs. . .

Obviously I would support doing away with the gun ban in Washington D.C. if for no other reason than that it's a human, not to mention Constitutional right. The funniest (in an ironic way) response to the idea of allowing gun ownership:

"I think it should be illegal in the city because mistakes, recklessness and general animosity can lead to shootings," said one local resident.

Oh, Honey, guns are already banned in DC and yet it has the highest rate of homicide by firearm rate in the country if measured against the other fifty states. Crooks and gangbangers are having a field day against the unarmed populace there. Try giving the law abiding a fighting chance!

Could Barry and the City Council be considering this as a way of derailing the Parker case? If Parker goes away it would probably be quite awhile before another good 2A case could be mounted in the District.

Who are they trying to shit? All they would do is register, trace and then confiscate. These assholes are so easy to see thru. Jack.

I doubt it's a ploy to register and confiscate. More likely, it's a lame attempt to make an unworkable law "workable" by allowing a gazillion scoff "laws" to go legit, then supposedly getting Real Serious Now in enforcing the law going forward. Think illegal aliens + amnesty.

This is what the bastards might have in mind: They could look at the firearms related crimes 6 months before and after their "amnesty" and say: See - Easing up on the firearms restricions does not reduce crime. You know that their intent is not to soehow benefit the residents. Jack.

"Barry said he would not own a gun" - yeah felony convictions will do that.

Posted by: KCSteve at February 7, 2007 12:44 PM

So just how is this supposed to work? Does anybody have any idea how many gunshops there are in the District? I do. Zip. I know, we'll set up a big one weekend gun show at the MCI Center. Man, you could hear the caterwauling and gnashing of teeth all the way to the Rappahannock.

wow, sad to see what taking the government's word on this subject will do to you...guns are baaaadddddd. Those people who want to LEGALLY own one there as opposed to the countless numbers owned ILLEGALLY and used in the daily crimes....suckle at the teat and enjoy your shackles. Morons.

After living in Washington DC for 6 years, I think it is insane to have a gun control registration and laws. DC already had many guns. Many people of DC laugh at the law anyways, because they know like I know that DC is full of guns. The DC gun control laws are a form of 21st century slavery, where slaves cannot own weapons. I find it funny that they tend to do laws like this in populations where blacks are prevalent. It is some coincidence.

Quoting article...

"A recent Metropolitan Police Department report on homicides from 2001 to 2005 states that 901 of 1,126 homicide victims, or about 80 percent, were fatally shot."

Wow. Banning handguns works great!

In the USA, over 42,000 people are killed in automobile-related incidents EVERY YEAR. Obviously people can't handle the driving privelege either... so let's ban automobiles too!!!
You can't legislate common sense, or self defense. Leave our second amendment rights alone!

Even if the ban on registration of handguns were lifted, the other laws on the books are onerous enough to prevent the registration of all pistols. Only revolvers would be allowed under the other laws as currently written and enforced. Despite the fact that semi-auto firearms (long guns) with a cartridge capacity of 12 (presumably 11+1) are allowed by law; the Police refuse to register anything with a detachable magazine. This rule is even enforced for firearms for which high capacity magazines are NOT available. I know this through first-hand experience. The Police officers staffing the firearms registration unit think nothing of abusing their power in this way.

I guess Mr Barry is doing whatever drugs he was doing before. I have to agree, why suspend a law,
just to put it back in effect? Sounds a little cynical to me.....Why not just do away with the whole stupid law
to begin with. Let the people in DC have means
to defend themselves....The criminal element don't
abide by these rules....Give the people back their
guns.
If the gun is used,in a crime, then let the legal system take over...Go after the criminal, not the gun owner.
Some people think just because you own a gun,you
cannot be trusted to use it responsibly. Hopefully, one of these years the people of DC will have their rights restored to them. As long as they keep electing the people they do, it will
not happen(unfortunately). It's time to a more conservative element in power instead of the liberals they have been electing....Good luck to the people of DC

The problem here is that we have to attribute rational motives to a guy who has been doing coke, and lord knows what else, for at least the last 15-20 years. And may now be going to the clink because he violated probation on a tax evasion charge by stopping paying his taxes. Whatever is in Marion Barry's head, the odds are it is not in ours. Including but not limited to a bunch of mood-altering chemicals.
