Forget the Gun Show Loophole...

We need an ex-cop loophole:

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A former police officer accused of illegally selling hundreds of guns has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

Mark Nelson, 35, his wife and two other family members each pleaded guilty in August to one count of making a false statement in the acquisition of a firearm. He received the maximum sentence Tuesday from U.S. District Judge Edmund Sargus Jr.

[...]

Authorities said guns traced to Nelson were used in crimes in several states, and one was found on terrorist suspects detained as they tried to enter Canada in 2005.

Nelson, who joined Columbus police in 1997 and left in 2005 because of a back problem, put 501 guns on the streets, according to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"He knowingly — he's a former police officer — was a portal diverting guns from the federally mandated tracking system, diverting them into the hands of felons," Assistant U.S. Attorney Doug Squires said.

Prosecutors said Nelson enlisted his relatives to buy guns in 2005 because he was denied when a background check showed he was under indictment for felonious assault.

He was aided by a firearms dealer who "suggested" he have members of his family purchase the guns for him, which he then sold on the street, I guess.

During sentencing, Nelson asked for leniency because, "I've always had high respect for the law."

Right.

I should point out that in the first sentence of this post I'm only being snarky. Obviously the vast -- 99.99% -- of cops and retired cops out there are good, honest, law abiding folks. They're the ones who should be most pissed at Nelson. As for the gun dealer -- shame on him. People like him are what give Bloomberg and his law-breaking "investigators" any traction at all.

10 yrs in prison? As an FFL I'd probably get that for not crossing a "T" on a 4473. Jack.

Yard Sale Loophole - I'm trying to spread the proper name. Get the real name circulating and the argument collapses under its own obvious stupidity. Keep the name the antis gave it and you keep it sounding 'evil'.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
