What I'm Reading

I've got a long weekend off and will be reading some of my ebay booty. I got a bunch of Larry Niven books and will finally tackle Tales of Known Space and the whole Ringworld series. Also in that stack is the first two World of the Ptavvs and Integral Trees series...

Have a great weekend and as always, thanks for stopping by!

Update: I finished Ringworld and I'm not all that impressed. Once they were on the ringworld, it was actually rather boring...

Don't miss the books Niven and Pournell. "Lucifer's Hammer" might keep you awake nights wondering about the possibility of a major impact (comet, astroid, etc.) and the devestating effects on civilization.

Larry Niven's Known Space series is part of what my introduction to science fiction was.

The remainder being Fred Saberhagen and Robert Heinlein.

For a view of the world we are fighting against do not miss Larry Niven's The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton. This contains stories about a UN world government and particularly covers the dreadful reality it would likely come to.

Ringworld is more the culmination of Known Space than a good starting place...

Don't forget some of Niven's excellent shorter works.

If you haven't read "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex," you're in for a treat.

Hilarious stuff.

If Ringworld didn't hit your switches then you should stop there - the rest of the series goes downhill fast. I liked RW a lot, but even I couldn't finish The Ringworld Throne.

In addition to the ones recommended above (esp. Lucifer's Hammer), try N&P's The Mote in God's Eye. Again, many feel (as I do) that the sequels decline rapidly in quality, so don't feel you have to read them all.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Niven - early Niven. The later stuff gets kinda weak in my view.

Start early, then work your way up. Enjoy!

One of the first sci-fi books I ever read was a Larry Niven work called "A World Out of Time" I thought it was really clever and have read it more than once. Give it a "shot".

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
