Whacky Weather Hurts

In many states where there are a lot of different kinds of industry, the unusual warm spell doesn't really hurt much. In Vermont, it's been near catastrophic in terms of the economy which during the Winter is dependent upon the ski industry.

Many ski resorts here have only feeble, man-made snow which is in poor shape due to all the rain and high temperatures. Some resorts have none.

The resorts are empty of vacationers. All the Inns and motels that serve those resorts are empty. The restaurants and gift shops that depend on the above are empty of tourists. The gas stations, mini-marts and so on are also "starving."

The warm spell is definitely fun, a nice topic of conversation. But I hope it ends very soon. My friends and neighbors depend on the "snow bunnies" for their livelyhoods.

Y'better scrap the SUV and begin praising Al Gore 5 times a day and once a night before it gets even hotter...

My old grandfather ("Grumps" age 91, and a bad tempered as ever) said there was some wierd weather after WW1, which the experts said was the fault of wireless...

The cold winters of the 40's culminating in 1947 were blamed (by the experts) on the effects of high flying aircraft...

during my childhood, the media was talking about the start of the next ice age, there were even crappy things about it on kiddies TV,

Yep it's warm, the low altitude ski resorts that opened all over tha alps in the 70's through to mid 80's are gradually closing, reliable good snow now begins above 1850m (300m = 1000 feet)and they're about the same lattitude as you (45 north) but they have warm seas either side.

Be interesting to see if this is the 20 to 30 year cycle that we've seen through the last couple of centuries, with the sort of cold winters that froze napoleon out of Russia, Stalin out of Finland, Hitler out Russia and froze our nuts off in the 70's and early 80's returning in a few years time.

Who knows

This shows up the weakness of having a large share of our economic engine in the tourism sector. We have come to rely on outsiders coming to the state so we can milk them (9% rooms and meals tax as an example). It just should not be done. It is not a very (eco-word alert) sustainable thing to do.

Now if FedEx and the rest were willing to help, eastern and central Colorado are looking for places to dump the last three snowfalls - and the fourth we expect on Thursday/Friday. Winds up to 115 mph yesterday didn't help mush, either.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
