Idiocy in Ark City, Kansas

In a biased piece, we learn a lot about the low opinion that cops and former cops hold of their subjects in Ark City, Kansas. This is with reference to the Kansas law that went into effect January 1st, allowing residents who've passed background checks, training, etc., to obtain a permit allowing them to conceal carry firearms. From ArkCity.net:

Locally, 120 people have applied for a license. It's an issue that stokes emotions on both sides.

Ark City resident Rebecca McGary is uneasy about the law.

"I don't like the idea of 120 people that I don't know carrying guns," McGary said. "Those people might be well balanced when they receive the permit, but things change."

The licenses are being distributed this week, and many businesses have to decide whether they want to post a sign which prohibits license holders from carrying a concealed weapon into their store.

The sign, which is similar to the no-smoking sign, features a black silhouette of a gun on a white background, surrounded by a red circle with a slash through it.

Earlier this month former Ark City Police Chief Dan Givens informed local businesses about the law and asked them to post the sign. That ignited a few unfavorable opinions about Ark City resident Givens' action.

"It's one thing to inform. It's another to make it your agenda," Ark City resident Jason Smith said.

Indeed. The current Police Chief, Sean Wallace, claiming -- in so many words -- that many ordinary citizens aren't trained to handle a firearm in a conflict, offers this nonsense:

Police officers are trained to diffuse situations that would involve using a firearm. For instance, if someone posed a deadly threat to an officer or citizen, the police officer could use chemical mace, or a taser, before a gun.

In addition, officers are trained to eliminate the need to use a gun with verbal skills. Wallace said many citizens don't have those tools or skills at their disposal, leaving only the gun.

Yes, just ask all the innocent people gunned down by New York City cops.

I'm a little surprised about the Ark City ( it's actually Arkansas City, but everyone in the area abbreviates it ) chief. That burg is small enough you'd think the urban nanny attitude wouldn't surface. Of course, a small town police chief can get pretty full of himself, just like a big city one.

Here in Wichita I was surprised by how many businesses DID NOT have the sign up yesterday. I may have to canvas several of the shopping areas and strip malls this weekend and collect some statistics.

"For instance, if someone posed a deadly threat to an officer or citizen, the police officer could use chemical mace, or a taser, before a gun."

This moron was a police chief? If someone poses a deadly threat, you respond with deadly force. Anything else is reckless and irresponsible.

I love how they end the article:
"Ishmail Farid, owner of the Coffee Club in Ark City, doesn't like the idea of a regular citizen carrying a gun into his store.

Farid immigrated from Malaysia, a country that has strict gun control laws that limit the availability of guns to non-law enforcement officers. Violation of such laws can result in seven years imprisonment or death by hanging."

I'm sure the editors of this paper would love to have Malaysian style gun control here.

As far as Farid, he he doesn't like freedom, then he can bugger off back to Malaysia where he came from. We have more than enough home grown anti-freedom bigots.

THAT and the opening whine by one citizen were the reasons I deemed this so heavily biased.

So the cops are trained to "diffuse" such situations, eh? Sounds to me like a reporter wasn't trained very well in the English language, use thereof.

Private citizens who are concerned enough to get the training, background check and the permit frequently practice more than police officers and are arguably better shots. They're not likely to use their weapons without thinking because they know they're not protected from prosecution by a badge. And they're very seldom stupid enough to use their weapons in commission of a crime because they know their name and fingerprints are on file. As recent shootings of unarmed folks who posed no threat of any kind by police show, officers and deputies are no more immune to adrenalin than anyone else and less inhibited because they know their chances of going to prison for murder are nil...they could lose their badge, but the number of prosecutions is tiny.
Frikking "holier than thou" attitudes by small town would-be Gauleiters like these "heap big Chiefs" frost my windows.

LEO's often must inject themselves into stressful situations. Unfortunately, good guys and bad guys no longer wear black and white hats, and the LEO may have to interpret exactly what is happening. Thus the need for intensive training. When a woman is faced with a man with a knife who says "your'e coming with me", there is very little to interpret. Why can't these people understand this?

"I don't like the idea of 120 people that I don't know carrying guns,"

I DO like the idea of 120 MORE people I don't know carrying guns, people at least somewhat trained and vetted - to help offset all the thugs, criminals and nuts who are already carrying guns illegally.

Posted by: Glenmore at January 5, 2007 09:13 AM

Right, Glenmore, and those illegallly carrying are going to keep carrying illegally no matter how many laws get passed...they're criminals already. The 120 more trained, checked and permitted armed folks act a s a great deterrent...If you can't tell who's armed and who's not, they're not as likely to go attack a stranger, are they?

"I don't like the idea of 120 people that I don't know carrying guns"

I guess ignorance is bliss. She seems to forget that there may be hundreds of criminals out there carrying guns who she "doesn't know". Besides, what the hell difference does it make if she knows them?!

I happen to live in this town, and the former COP did make it his agenda, and the way he went about "informing "business owners, went something like this, "Here put this in your window".
The people don't realize that the police have NO duty to protect you. Refer to , "Warren v. District of Columbia. Not only do they have no obligation to protect you, they are immune from all liabilities. I'll protect myself
