Murder Up in Gun-Free NYC & Chicago

It's up in several cities, actually. From USA Today:

New York reported 579 homicides through Dec. 24 — a nearly 10% increase from the year before. The spike mostly reflects an unusually large number of "reclassified homicides," or those involving victims who were shot or stabbed years ago but did not die until this year. Thirty-five such deaths have been added to this year's toll, compared with an annual average of about a dozen.

In Chicago, homicides through the first 11 months of the year were up 3.3% compared with the same period in 2005, reversing a four-year decline.

If you read the article closely, you'll see a common thread. In all these cities, the murder rates went up due to gang violence or, in the case of Houston, an influx of New Orleans refugees.

While I'm sure that Brady Bunch types will blame the gun, I think reasonably sane people will realize that the problem isn't one of firearms but of demographics. The types of mutants killing each other in gang wars or due to being "disrespected" or some such nonsense are never going to obey a gun control law. Gun control doesn't work. Criminal control does.
