MA Mayor Wants AR-15 Ban

Because someone used one in commission of a crime, they should all be banned:

New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang said he is meeting with lawmakers to draft a law that would block civilians from legally buying or possessing the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. The weapon, a civilian version of the military’s M16 rifle, was used by Scott Medeiros to fatally blast Foxy Lady doorman Bobby Carreiro and manager Tory Marandos and shoot a patron and two police officers before he killed himself.

Police say Medeiros legally obtained the weapon and ammunition. In the wake of the massacre, officers complained that their service pistols and shotguns left them at a disadvantage against Medeiros as he blew out cruiser windows and tires with bullets sprayed from the AR-15.

"There’s no rhyme or reason to have civilians with this type of firepower," Lang said. "It’s not something that you could ever possibly justify. It’s insanity and it doesn’t fit in society in any way."

Another of those semi-automatics that "spray" bullets... By Lang's logic, since a revolver was once used to kill someone, they should all be banned. Actually, a baseball bat has been known to be used so...

Just more feel good bullshit. A Remington 870 with 00 buck has it all over any rifle at close range. Jack.

Friend I have fired pretty much everytime of fully-automatic weapon the US Army had to offer....I would take that Remington 870 any day of the week.

Federalist papers and the Constitution, anyone? The reason civilians ought to have that kind of firepower (and more IMHO) is to keep folks like hizzoner the mayor from telling us which hand to wipe ourselves with and how much we should give him as a Christmas bonus.

It may not have a place in HIS kind of society but it sure does in a free society.

A Remington 30-06 hunting rifle could have been used instead of an AR-15 with much more deadly consequences. A 30-06 hunting rifle has much more power than the AR-15 .223 round. A Remington 30-06 semi-automatic firearm has just as much "firepower" as the AR-15 and fires a round that has much more actual energy. A Remington 30-06 semi-automatic firearm has a detachable magazine just like the AR-15, and therefore the number of rounds it can hold is limited not be the firearm itself but by the detachable magazine.

A bolt action hunting rifle could also have been used and been just as deadly as the AR-15. When comparing a semi-automatic and a bolt action what difference does it make if five rounds can be fired in 2 seconds for a semi-automatic or maybe 5 seconds or so for a bolt action? Five well placed rounds from a bolt action are just as deadly as five well placed rounds from a semi-automatic.

But, of course, these politicians don't want facts to get in the way of their anti-gun agenda.

Lawyers and mayors have killed people too. Let's ban them FIRST.

Heck, he could have used a Krag or a SMLE...

At the time the scary-looking rifle ban was first being promoted, a review of Chicago crime statistics showed that more people had been murdered by strangulation with undergarments than by being shot with military-caliber rifles. Ban the bra!

Has there ever been a crime committed with a limousine like the mayor rides in? He'd better walk from now on.

Posted by: Jeffro at December 20, 2006 09:16 PM

Heck, I say ya do it the way it gets done in the wild wild west (I'm from Vegas). Find the fellow that shot that nutjob and give him a bottle of whiskey and say "Thanks."

Don't start banning things. Keep everything free and open and reward good conduct- especially when it punishes bad!

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
