Another Rag Publishes Gun Permit Holders

Reader "Moose" sent me a link to this Journal News (NY) story bemoaning the disorganized record keeping by NY authorities of who has pistol permits in NY. There's a discussion going on about it here.

There are also two links to where the paper publishes the names of all permit holders in two NY counties but I refuse to put those up and again, shame on the Journal News for invading people's privacy. How come you're not listing all holders of driver's licenses? Cars kill far more people every year.

Someone needs to do what was done in Ohio--get the names, addresses, and phone numbers of *everyone*, starting from the top down, who works at that paper, and publish them on the web.

"What's the problem? You guys thought it was OK when *you* did it!"

Consider http://www.gunlawnews.org/Other-News/otfa-2.html. I am not sure if I will leave it up permanantly or take it down after an hour or two. I am not entirely confortable with the concept, although it does seem poetic.

Why shame on the press? Why not shame on the government who is collecting the information in the first place. Vermont works fine without a pistol registration.

When citizens allow the government to require licenses to do things, don't expect the government to keep the information private.

If those two NY counties are in NYC, please connect.
I would like to see the names of the politically connected and famous on it.
Actually, even if they're not in NYC, you should connect.
Considering how difficult it is in NY State to get a CCW permit, a good percentage, no matter what the county, will receive one not through need but political favors.
If NY State were a must issue you would be moral correct but it is not so do it Jeff, do it.

Terry

NY is Shall Issue only in terms of getting the permit. Their permit is kind of odd. You need the permit to buy a pistol, and the permit allows you to carry the gun while going to, doing, and coming home from whatever the approved listed activities are. So it isn't exactly a CCW, but then NY doesn't allow open carry. It's nuanced. Especially when the common reasons (insulting, oui?) you put down are "hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, target shooting" but if you're smart you'll also put in "jogging" or "biking" etc. There is no legal definition of hiking or jogging - it requires no special clothing, location, or equipment. So we are nuanced right back at the state.

I have one, so I know. And I'm on one of those published lists the Journal News referred to. And I am not happy.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
