December 15, 2006From Gun-Free EnglandHere's the lead from a BBC story:
Well, maybe they can but I'm sure that -- since guns are illegal in England -- criminals are NOT buying them. After all, that would be illegal and we all know that criminals obey gun control laws. Posted by Jeff Soyer at December 15, 2006 06:16 AM Comments
I've heard that black market prices in the US are comparable to the retail price. I wonder what it means that black market firearms in the UK are so cheap? I'm guessing, and this is just a guess, that there's a lot more smuggling of really cheap firearms into Britain from Eastern Europe than there are here. Smuggling is a lot easier to accomplish when you don't have to deal with ships or planes. I'd be willing to bet Britain's increase in gun crime has a lot more to do with the Channel Tunnel than the fact that they made them illegal. Eliminating the primary market for firearms only made smuggling more lucrative and attractive, and with train service from the mainland, easier than ever. Posted by: Sebastian at December 15, 2006 11:06 AMI'm filing a formal complaint with the WTO, if we had more illegal guns here criminals wouldn't be stealing from folks...maybe we can get congress in on this under the commerce clause they should endorse a black market, good for the economy you know. Posted by: Tom at December 17, 2006 03:03 AMOh sure, call it a black market and have the UN call us all racists. :) Posted by: straightarrow at December 18, 2006 12:39 AMI've never been inclined to go into the dodgy pubs and clubs to check it out, but rumors have always abounded about how cheap illegal stuff is in britain. True they did not specify what £50 got you (probably a plainclothes cop...) but it does point to a market that is super saturated. Where there is a demand, a market will always develop to satisfy it. What does not seem to be evident is a home built industry, which would point to the restrictions bighting the criminal supply systems. PS. I gather from a cop that the east european gangs are pushing out the nigerian and jamaican gangs, so perhaps it is a white (Russian) market.
