When Nannies Conflict

Here's a strange one! From News 14, Charlotte (NC):

In an effort to protect residents from potential fire safety concerns, the Charlotte City Council is considering passing a ban on having bars on home windows. The bars pose a serious fire safety risk.

"Anything that's going to block your exit from your home, such as furniture or stored items, that can delay you escaping," said Capt. Rob Brisley of the Charlotte Fire Department.

The proposal is currently being considered by the Council's Neighborhood Development Committee, and if passed would not affect bars on basement windows or on businesses.

While the ban would reduce the safety hazard related to fires, some council members argue that there are more pressing safety concerns for some city residents.

"You're probably more likely to have a break-in in some parts of the city than a fire," said Councilman Michael Barnes.

Tracey Blando, an owner of a business that sells window bars, says that her customers purchase the bars for peace of mind, and that most models are made with hinges that can be easily unlocked from the inside in case of a fire.

There's another reason for those bars. Matter of fact, I believe that in many cities such as NYC, bars are required on some windows to prevent young children from falling out and to their deaths from high building windows.

So, this is a perfect example of what happens when you adopt the 'Nanny State" model of government. Do you protect your wards for escape from a fire, or to prevent burglaries, or to prevent tots from dropping five stories to their deaths?

I'd go for a ban on City Councils. Jack.

Simple solution: bars that are rigged so they open outward when you press on the upper portion. Actually you want them to rotate like the one-way gates that used to be common in the bad old 'pre accessiblity' days. That way you can get out when you want, bad guys can't get in, and short people are trapped inside. Ok, there's the minor problem of getting flaming short people out, but it's an imperfect world.

I say we put the council members behind bars...

My house has bars on the lower window that's big enough for someone to enter (came with the house, though they're reassuring), and sure enough there's a simple turn-latch on the inside to allow them to swing open. I don't see the issue, honestly.

KCSteve: Tricky to do that without making it possible for someone outside to trip the latch using a probe or simply by reaching in, even without the flaming midget problem.

I think we should pass a law requiring all nanny statists to be dropped to their deaths from a five story window.

isn't that why we have smoke detectors? To WARN YOU to get out?

Do we remove the bars from prisons in case the prisoners can't get out if there's a fire?

problem. reaction. solution.

problem-we need more police powers, and money.

reaction- force people to remove means of keeping criminals out of their homes.

solution- CHA-CHING $$$$$$

Oh, and add my name as a co-sponsor on that bill Gerry.

Our house came with really neat windows. All of the windows - including the patio door - are double-pane with built-in bars.

They've got 1/2" flat steel strap formed into 'panes' between the actual panes of glass. Makes them look like they're the old fashioned multi-pane windows. The latches are simple and easy to work but only from the inside. To open our windows from the outside you'd have to break through both panes in two places, reach both hands in, rock the latches toward yourself, and lift. From the inside you just put your hands on the latches and lift.

In answer to the question they will eventually have embraced all the positions posted in the topic's question. Whoever writes the scariest scenario will have the hysterical sheep applauding the "we are doing something" city councils. Before it is all over, bars will go up, down and for each reason listed and some we haven't even thought of yet.

The cowards and the councils will feel better and nobody will have been served with any action of substance.

But hey, when they remove personal choice and freedom of action and responsibility nobody has to ever face the consequences of their own decisions, after all, it was the law.

Not my fault, Hey, i didn't do nothing, hey, I had to do what they said. Hey, I had no choice,my hands were tied, I didn't want to get in trouble. etc. etc. etc.

Pitiful.
