Homeowner Shoots Intruder

From the self-defense files comes this St. Paul Pioneer Press (MN) story:

With its always-drawn curtains, boarded-up back windows and no cars in the driveway, the house might have looked like easy pickings to a burglar.

Wrong.

It was one resident short of being vacant, and Gerry Whaley was one rifle short of being defenseless Monday night, police said.

That became deadly clear just before 11 p.m., when an intruder armed with a flashlight met Whaley, armed with his .22-caliber rifle. Whaley shot and killed the man.

Whaley, a slight-framed, 73-year-old widower described by neighbors as reclusive, had been awakened to sounds of what he thought was someone breaking into his house on Bittersweet Street in Coon Rapids, investigators said Tuesday. He grabbed his rifle around the time a man in his late teens or early 20s entered his second-floor bedroom, according to Anoka County sheriff's Capt. Bob Aldrich, relating Whaley's account.

Authorities say this looks like a justified shooting and charges have not been lodged, although prosecutors will have the final say.

Jeff:

You wouldn't believe the local coverage of this going on here...naturally, although he was a "troubled" boy, he was really just mama's little angel. One local newscast referred to the burglar as a "victim". Try reading the local EyeWash News stories, and keep from gagging.

I've got to laugh.

Why isn't that reporter writing novels, if he can produce material like this for the news?

The opening is suspenseful, draws the reader in well, and proceeds to a well-delivered close.

All in three short paragraphs.

Good to hear that a 0.22 rifle is good for more than one kind of varmint.

These are my favorite news stories. There must be a site that just posts all of the submitted links regarding self defense articles, I must be missing it, no?

Matt,
Try keepandbeararms.com. Take the comments with a grain of salt. Lots of links to defensive shootings though.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
