Brady Bunch Concedes, Gun Control Off Table?

Or are they playing ropey-dopey? From USA Today:

Advocates for abortion rights, gun control and gay rights say they are thrilled by the Democratic takeover of Congress. Even so, they admit their issues aren't likely to be addressed early — or at all — during the legislative session that begins in January.

[...]

•Gun control: Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, says he has seen a list of the top 100 Democratic priorities; reinstating the now-expired ban on military-style assault weapons is "in the 90s." At least, he says, conservatives can't weaken gun control laws.

That's somewhat of a different tune than he was singing a couple weeks ago but with heavy-hitting senior hacks such as Kennedy and Schumer still setting the real agendas, we shall see... If gun control measures do make it to the House or Senate, we'll also see if newbies like Webb, Tester, and others who ran as pro-gun rights advocates cave in to party pressure.

There is some hope, though, that this is for real. From the News Observer:

Democrats will want to keep those hard-won gains. And having tasted victory in red states, Democrats likely will want to go back and win the 14 House seats they lost by less than 1 percent, many of them in red states.

[...]

...Another example: The last time the Democrats controlled the Congress, in 1994, they made gun control a centerpiece of their domestic agenda. This time around, many Democrats boast of their support for gun rights.

"If somebody brings up guns," said Democratic strategist James Carville, "I'm going to shoot 'em."

Heh. Of course, they could just shut up about gun control for two years, hoping to capture the White House and more seats in Congress, and then start in. Or, they could wisely decide that maybe ALL of the Bill of Rights is sacred in which case, as I've said before, they could be the majority party for years to come.

Jeff, I said that before myself. If they want our guns, they have to get the absolute majority and the White House in order to win. I really don't think that the Dhimmis are going to try it with the slim majority they hold now.

I wouldn't be surprised at them trying for more restrictions, but I think they may try for a more low-key approach, or try a new angle from which to attack.

I think it's almost a given that Dem. leadership will persue this at some point. The question is, will the freshman remain true to their constituency, or be intimidated by Dick Durbin?

And if Carville is serious, I can find a gun for him to use. Just hope he isn't terribly recoil sensitive.

Don't forget that the gun-controllers have an ally, hiding in the tall grass as it were, in the White House. Bush supported the renewal of the so-called "assault weapons" ban, but didn't push it lest he offend his base even more than he did with open borders, amnesty for illegals, and expanding the Feds both in money and power.

You are right, they won't try anything as big as the AWB within 2 years. However, that does not mean they will not try to repeal the smaller things that have been passed, like manufacturer limitied liability for civil cases. Or funding some of the laws that are currently on the books but not active because no money has been given to them.

Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
