Finder's Keepers?

Isn't it like finding money? From Florida Today:

A man in Maitland, Fla., found a stash of guns hidden in his bushes Sunday, according to FLORIDA TODAY news partner WKMG Local 6 News.

The homeowner said he has lived in the home for about a year but never noticed a blue canvas bag containing the weapons in some bushes.

Maitland police are trying to determine if the guns are stolen or if they have been used in crimes, Local 6 News reported.

Officers seized the guns and said depending on what they find, the weapons may be destroyed.

If it's determined that they were not stolen and nobody claims them, the homeowner who found them should get them back. Me? I probably wouldn't have said anything...

It would certainly be tempting to keep them, but would you really want to be in possession of guns that might prove to be a ballistic match to a murder?

I have to agree with Anon... Wouldn't have much choice but to turn 'em in. If they're stolen hopefully they will be returned to the rightful owner/owners. If they were used in crimes, hopefully the cops will get some fingerprint matches. Turning them in is the only responsible answer. If the cops outright destroy them, they're not doing their job right.

Yeah, I suppose I'd have to turn them in...

Man, the idea is tempting, just like finding money. But could you believe having to explain a few years down the road where you were on the night of...

...and your defense is I found those guns on my property a few years ago, and just hung on to them.

One of the participants in the Usenet alt.dumpster newsgroup found a handgun in a dumpster she was diving. As per the TV shows, she lifted it out with a pencil thru the trigger guard, dropped it in a baggie, and took it to the police station. A few days later, they contacted her and deposed her as to when and where it was found. Not only did the ballistics match a recent shooting, but the prints matched those of a suspect.

Ya'll aren't thinking creatively enough...

Wait until the Monday after there's a gun show in your area, then tell the cops you bought some guns at the show and you want to know if they've been reported stolen.

On the odd chance they come up hot, tell them you bought them from a "white guy, probably about 5'10", 180 lbs, brown hair, brown eyes...had on an NRA hat and an old field jacket..."

Makes one think.

If you found a baby and took it in...and nobody claimed it...and it wasn't stolen...or used in a crime (as a club as in Erie, PA) would they destroy it?

You could always just buy some new parts and slap them in there, they're close enough to the ocean to make the old parts disappear.
