Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

Welcome to America, land of the free:

Belmont is set to make history by becoming the first city in the nation to ban smoking on its streets and almost everywhere else.

The Belmont City Council voted unanimously last night to pursue a strict law that will prohibit smoking anywhere in the city except for single-family detached residences. Smoking on the street, in a park and even in one’s car will become illegal and police would have the option of handing out tickets if they catch someone.

This must be part of the new Orwellian vision of the Democrats for "the common good."

I'm not going to defend smoking but what about someone driving through town who lights up in his car. Is he a criminal, now? And is ticketing pedestrians on the street or drivers in their car who are smoking really the best use of a police force? It's good to see that fascism is alive and well on the left coast.

Notice that they say, " will prohibit smoking anywhere in the city except for single-family detached residences."

They even show it wasn't a mistake in later paragraphs, "The council was concerned about people smoking in multi-unit residences."

That means they think they can come into your apartment or condo and give you a ticket for smoking.

Some people don't want citizens, they want subjects.

Who said that the new Democrats were a different breed?

They just sound that way until they get power. Take a long hard look at B_liar's fourth world banana republic to see all of the other good ideas that will help humanity to "progress"

It is all for the greater good, you do realize that don't you?

Hell, it's enough to make me want to take up smoking again.

I WILL defend smoking. Not because I think anyone should do it, but because no government, small or large, should have any say on this or any other personal choice.

It's sad that this is even considered when we are so graphically seeing the failure, damage, and waisted cost of the war on drugs.

Cig heil! Tobacco Nazis want everyone to bow down to their totalitarianism. I don't smoke anymore but freedom still matters.

you think we can tag on a fence for the Kali. border too?

“I would just like to say ‘no smoking’ and see what happens and if they do smoke, [someone] has the right to have the police come and give them a ticket,” said Councilwoman Coralin Feierbach.

If that's not German, it's close enough for me. I think someone has the right to smack her upside the head with a copy of every one of our founding documents engraved on stainless steel, especially those that mention that crazy "freedom" thing.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
