Menino and Blowhard Again

Because what better way to capitalize on tragic murders than to grab the liberal media and demand nationwide gun control:

Menino and Bloomberg, at a Boston City Hall news conference yesterday , said the coalition they started in April with 15 members has grown to 109 mayors and plans to begin lobbying for stricter gun-control laws. The group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, also announced plans for regional databases to track illegal firearms and a new website on gun-trafficking legislation.

"The horrific shooting this last week in Lancaster is a tragic reminder of what happens when guns end up in the wrong hands," said Bloomberg, referring to the gunman who entered a Pennsylvania schoolhouse Tuesday and shot 10 girls. He was armed with three guns and 600 rounds of ammunition. "We know we can't do much to stop a law-abiding gun owner who suddenly loses his mind, but the fact is most murderers who use guns acquire them illegally. . . . To really make a dent in this problem we have to work together. The gun laws of one state affect the people of all the other states."

The mayors said they hope to stanch the flow of guns from states that have less-stringent laws by pressing for tougher gun-control measures nationwide...

But the example he uses, the Amish schoolhouse shooter, is exactly what he says we can't prevent. A normal -- up until Monday -- guy who legally owned weapons and then snapped.

Boston Mayor Menino. NYC Mayor Michael Blowhard, and their ilk will not rest until all law abiding citizens are defenseless and only the thugs have guns.

One microscopic, bright spot in the dull pallor of op-eds calling for increased gun control is a guest editorial by Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Dave Workman, senior editor of Gun Week. Writing in the Dallas Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

The dirty little secret of all these atrocities is that they happened in so-called "gun-free school zones." Before enactment of that horribly misguided federal legislation and its state-level clones, one never read about school massacres because there weren't any.

The Gun-Free School Zones Act transformed the public school landscape into a free-fire zone for whackos by removing any possibility, however small, that an armed teacher, student or private citizen might be present to intervene.

As a result, monsters like Colorado's Duane Morrison or Pennsylvania's Charles Roberts, and a host of others have committed mayhem, courtesy of gun-control fanatics who pressured Congress and state legislatures to pass such statutes.

The exception is Luke Woodham, who shot up Mississippi's Pearl High School in 1997 after slitting his mother's throat. Midway through his spree, Woodham encountered Vice Principal Joel Myrick, who had rushed to his car to retrieve a .45-caliber pistol. Myrick aimed the gun at Woodham's head and held him until police arrived.

You read little about Myrick's heroism, and less about his handgun, in the press.

I believe there was a similar case of a shooting at a college where one of the students retrieved a gun and held the mutant at bay. One of you will no doubt refresh my memory.

One reason these psychos might be going to schools is because they know they won't run into opposition.

Wasn't the teacher in Jonesboro, AR in the reserves? I believe he kept a gun in his car when he stopped the kids and their shooting spree. Could be wrong.

The percentage of 'crime guns' from PA goes up everytime a gun-bigot opens their mouth, from 60% a few weeks ago to 98% yesterday. As a PA resident I can say for sure it is in no way easy to purchase a firearm. I must go through the 'end all crime' NICS check just like any other state. The second amendment is not about crime control anyway.

Is there a list of these commie mayors? Bet most of them are democrats. They love taking away the rights of the people. Looking for an excuse to disarm us.That PA. mess was just tailored made for those mayor assholes. May they rot in hell with stalin.

Actually, a Reuters headline stated that the psycho targeted the Amish school because it was an "easy target." I would say this lends more than a little creedence to the argument that gun-free zones = criminal run amok zones.

So they got 109 slimy little Stalinists to whine about not having enough control over their(?) populations. If it wasn't guns it would be some other part of the bill of rights.

Where are all the federal prosecutors filing charges of conspiracy against 109 mayors who have publicly admitted that they have agreed to break the law and violate the civil constitutional rights of all Americans? Where the Hell are all these dispensers of justice? Why aren't FBI agents and police chiefs arresting these criminals?

Yeah, I know why. But here is the real question, why do we not demand it? Why do not already impaneled Grand Juries not take this up? They are not required to follow a prosecutor's lead. They have the power to initiate a process. So why are we such ineffectual, useless drones with no sense of autonomy inherent to free men.

There was also an after-school shooting spree in Pennsylvania at an off-campus facility which was ended when the owner of the hall brought out a shotgun.

Jeff said: "Boston Mayor Menino. NYC Mayor Michael Blowhard, and their ilk will not rest until all law abiding citizens are defenseless and only the thugs have guns."

A minor quibble. The anti-gun politicians DO want all citizens to be disarmed so that they (the state) have a monopoly on effective power, but I'm willing to stipulate that at least some of them DO NOT affirmatively want thugs to have guns. (I do believe that some politicians are in the pay of criminals, and do indeed want to disarm the victims.) But all gun grabbers are willing to accept armed criminals as the price they have to pay for taking away the (much more numberous) guns of the law-abiding.

Politicians know that they themselves can either (1) retain arms for their own protection through legal loopholes and/or the practical realities of the political power structure, or (2) demand that other state agents be provided for their personal protection. Since virtually no politician can think beyond the next election, they never consider what rules they may have to live under after they leave office (the best reason, in my view, to amend the Constitution to impose term limits on legislators.)
