Shit & Shoot?

This would be another in the occasional series about how we are sometimes our own worst enemies or at least not helping our cause any. From the Nashua Telegraph (NH):

HUDSON – Charles Masterson was always taught that it’s safest to point a gun at the sky when it’s not being used, so that’s what he did when he stepped into a bathroom stall at the local Wal-Mart to relieve himself, he told police.

The precaution backfired when the gun went off and struck a ceiling tile, scaring the pants back on Wal-Mart employee, who came running out of the next stall. For placing that teenager in serious danger, police are holding Masterson criminally responsible.

Masterson, 36, of _________ in Nashua, was jailed overnight after the gun discharged, but released on personal recognizance Wednesday after an arraignment in Nashua District Court. Charged with felony reckless conduct, Masterson is accused of discharging the weapon in the bathroom of the Hudson Wal-Mart around 9 p.m. Tuesday. His 13-year-old son was also in the bathroom at the time, police said.

In an interview with police later that night, Masterson said he had been carrying the Glock 9mm pistol in his waistband. When asked why he felt the need to carry a concealed handgun at Wal-Mart, Masterson replied: “Well, I have the right to bear arms, you know.”

Yes, he had a CCW license. Yes, he has the RKBA. No, he doesn't have the right to handle a firearm unsafely and -- even though it was an accident -- fire it in a public bathroom. Keeping a handgun in your waistband instead of in a proper holster is dumb. Holding it up in the air with one hand while you take a crap is dumb. Not keeping your finger out of the trigger-guard until ready to shoot is dumb. I don't even think it's that smart to carry Glocks with a bullet chambered, because of the lack of a real safety other than the trigger button. (But that's just my own personal prejudice talking.)

About the only thing he got right was keeping the gun pointed in (what he felt was) a safe direction. Other than that, he makes all of us who support the right to conceal carry look like idiots in the eyes of the anti-gun crowd.

Talk about shooting the shit! Jack.

A very negligent discharge, for which it looks like he will pay a severe penalty. Fortuanately no one was injured.

The Glock has several internal safeties that make it perfectly safe to carry with a round in the chamber. You could drop it off your roof and it won't go off. Glocks only go off when poorly trained people pull the trigger by accident.

I never recommend neophytes buy a Glock for this reason. If you don't trust your trigger discipline, you should probably carry something other than a Glock, because carrying a gun for self-defense without a round in the chamber is a bad idea.

If it was a Glock, he had his finger on the trigger.

Didn't we just have a story about a policeman doing this and it was "no harm, no foul"?

There was a CCL-teaching LEO here who shot himself with a Glock. He claimed that the old plastic box, which has a post that goes through the trigger guard, fired a pistol when he tossed it into his truck. Fat chance. And why was he tossing a loaded gun around? The story finally came out that his girlfriend shot him by accident and he was covering it up. No charges were ever filed. No gun seized, et, et.

It's that LEO thing.

You know, some people are never stupid. Some people are stupid once in awhile (I include myself here). Some people are stupid all the time.

Given the fact that he was carrying his gun and treating it like he was a jack@ss, I'm afraid Masterson falls into the last category.

His CCW should be pulled (if it hasn't been already).

Ick ick ick!

The beauty of the four rules is that a stupid person can actually fail to follow one or more of them, but if that person adheres to just one of them the likelihood of serious injury, death or property destruction is substantially diminished.

That said, I will note that the number of negligent discharges I hear of involving Glocks handled by persons who SHOULD be competent seems to me to be disproportionate. I have declined several opportunities to purchase one cheap.

I have a Glock mod. 22 and it's perfectly safe provided one keeps one's finger off the trigger until sights are on the target. Basic rule.

There was a Mammoth Springs, Ark. police chief a few years ago who shot himself through the hand with his Glock. He claimed it fell off the night stand and discharged. I took mine apart and examined it. There is simply no way in Hell that gun can discharge unless the trigger is pulled fully to the rear. Period. You gotta pull the trigger all the way back.

That said, anyone who has an ND with a Glock can be assumed to have had his finger on the trigger at the very least. Don't holster with your finger on the trigger. Don't play with your gun in the public restroom.

stupid, yes. scared the Hell out of people, yes. Because he followed the rule, "don't point at anything you don't want to destroy" he didn't place anybody in danger.

This should be a misdemeanor disturbing the peace and destruction of private property case. He has already suffered more punishment than numerous cops that have done the same or worse. No excuse for his poor judgment, ours won't make it better.

I have carried and used Glocks since 1980. I have never had an ND...but I could like anyone else if I commit the biggie of putting my head where the guy in Wally*World's bathroom had his.( Well just before he pulled it out to go potty). Didn't Colonel Cooper say something about the most important safety being between the handler's ears? Also...anybody remember the lady in Dunbarton, NH a while back who shot herself in the behind parts holstering a 10mm Glock...WHILE ON THE RANGE??? Hoo Boy.
