Mayor Blowhard Signs New Gun Laws

It all seems so silly when you consider that it's nearly impossible for a law-abiding citizen to own a gun NOW and the thugs aren't going to pay any attention to these new requirements... From the NY Daily News:

Mayor Bloomberg took another step in his crusade against gun violence yesterday, signing four new measures into law, including one that sets up a registry for firearms offenders.

"These four bills are an important part of the city's comprehensive three-prong approach to combating illegal guns: stronger enforcement, new legislation and innovative litigation," Bloomberg said. "It will now be harder and riskier to buy and sell illegal guns in our city, and that's great news for law-abiding citizens."

The gun registry, which is similar to those for sex offenders, will require anyone convicted of criminal possession of a firearm in the second or third degree to register with the NYPD and report in every six months.

The other new laws will:

Track unaccounted-for guns by requiring city firearms merchants to inspect inventories twice a year and report the results to police.

Limit handgun purchases in the city to one every 90 days per individual.

Ban the use and sale of kits used to paint guns, which can result in real firearms looking like toys.

First of all, does this idiot mayor really think the Bloods, Crips, and MS 13 are going to "check-in" with the cops every half-year? Is he for real? And what does "checking-in" even mean, "So Johnny, have you bought any illegal guns in the last six months?" "No Sir, officer." "Oh, okay, see ya in another six months..."

As for the effectiveness of a "gun felon registry"... How well have the sex-offender ones worked?

One handgun every 90 days? Well, I suppose if anyone was really into collecting firearms they wouldn't be living in New York City anyway (or State, or N.J., etc.) but again, most mutants don't go through all the state required paperwork to begin with -- they don't even go through gun dealers. They steal the guns or trade them on the street for drugs etc.

Since the big crime problem in NYC is with street gangs, and since they are concerned with their "image", I doubt any of these thugs are painting their guns to look like SuperSoakers.

More nonsense legislation that won't do a thing. Getting prosecutors and judges who will lock this trash up for life will.

(emphasis added)

'innovative' as in, "you're not really doing anything wrong but we'll keep suing you anyway"?

"Ban the use and sale of kits used to paint guns, which can result in real firearms looking like toys."

What does this mean? Like they are going to market a kit expressly designed to paint up real guns to look like a toy! Anyone with some enamel paints and an airbrush can do this. Are they going to stake out hobby shops and arrest people buying a model airplane and paints just in case they're real purpose is to paint up a gun to look like a toy? No wonder the cops don't catch the bad guys - it's easier to catch the good guys. Mayor B must stay up all night to dream up this crap.

When you can't do something the right way, do something that makes you look good to the uninformed public. But we already know this. Jack.

msonic "Are they going to stake out hobby shops and arrest people buying a model airplane and paints just in case they're real purpose is to paint up a gun to look like a toy?"

Not yet, but give it time. Back in the late Fifties, there was a practice known as "glue sniffing" which was to put modelling glue in a plastic bag and inhale the fumes. So glues capable of melting the plastic (providing a permanent weld rather than a temporary adhesion: yes, even "super glue" only lasts until fully dry, it just takes a lot longer to reach that state) were outlawed - and the sniffers moved on to interior paints, which still have the chemicals desired...

I will get some mileage out of the "one gun every 90 days" law.

When some gun controller tells me that a "one gun every 30 days" law is not bad, I w1ll ask when they intend to make it one gun every 90 days.

When they say they don't want that, I will ask if they opposed the NYC 90 day law.

How about some old fashioned police work. Gang member gun owner could "accidentally" find his trigger finger caught between steel door and steel door frame as 250 pound cop accidentally slams door a couple of times. Perp is released with the advice that if he is ever arrested again with a gun he will get a Mogadishu drill run on him (2 to the chest, 1 to the head) and reported as having drawn the gun on the arresting officers. Pass it on to your buddies. At least one mutant would be doing less shooting, and it might even trickle down to some of his friends.

That's the Mozambique drill.

NY CITY COUNCIL PASSES GUN LEGISLATION PACKAGE
One of the bills is a:
Ban on Gun Coloration Kits, Int 0365-2006, Affirmative 49, Excused 3
This bill includes a ban on the use and sale of gun coloration
kits, which are used to paint guns in "toy-like" colors. Gun
coloration kits are currently available for purchase over the Internet
and through gun dealers. These kits are designed to color guns in a
number of bright fluorescent shades, making them easily mistakable for
toy guns - with potentially deadly consequences for police officers
and New Yorkers.

The bill contains the following provision:
When used in this subdivision, the term "deceptively colored firearm,
rifle, shotgun, or assault weapon" shall include any firearm, rifle,
shotgun, or assault weapon any substantial portion of whose exterior
surface is colored any color other than black, dark grey, dark green,
silver, steel, or nickel, except as provided in subparagraph (iii) of
this paragraph. For purposes of this subparagraph, the exterior
surface of either the receiver or the slide of a firearm shall be
deemed to constitute a substantial portion of the exterior surface of
the firearm.

It would appear that this ban will also ban camouflaged guns.

And as KCSteve pointed out at a posting at Arms & the Law, "Reading through that key paragraph it appears to outlaw blued guns."

Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
