Buy Those Assault Weapons While You Can...

For half-a-year now I've been telling you that the Democrats would probably re-take Congress this Fall. Everybody said, "No way." From Yahoo/AP:

Republicans are in jeopardy of losing their grip on Congress in November. With less than four months to the midterm elections, the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that Americans by an almost 3-to-1 margin hold the GOP-controlled Congress in low regard and profess a desire to see Democrats wrest control after a dozen years of Republican rule.

Further complicating the GOP outlook to turn things around is a solid percentage of liberals, moderates and even conservatives who say they'll vote Democratic. The party out of power also holds the edge among persuadable voters, a prospect that doesn't bode well for the Republicans.

True, the Democrats don't have an original idea -- or any plan -- for anything. BUT I think this is 1994 all over again. People are simply weary of the party in power. I hope I'm wrong but I doubt it. November will be a bloodbath for Republicans. If it is, come January 2007 there will be a new "assault weapons" ban. Bush will sign it. It might be the one that was, or it could be a tougher one.

Now listen to your cousin Jeff: Start saving your money. This Fall, start buying anything you have wanted but that might become a victim to the AWB. Want another AR? Better get it by the new year. Need more hi-cap magazines? Order them now. We've enjoyed good times regarding gun rights of late. If the Democrats take control of both houses in November, there WILL be changes. Maybe not at the state level but certainly with national gun laws.

Okay? You've been warned!

Update: And if I'm wrong, you still have some new toys...

Sorry to burst your illusions Jeff, but it will never happen. Simply, 100% absolutly will not and cannot happen.

System doesn't work that fast. AWB wont be law till February 2007.

I don't know, I can't wait to get the current crop of corrupt hypocrites out of power. Democrats are learning that gun control is not an issue they should keep messing with, a lot of them are realizing that politically, it's just not worth it. I hope I'm right.

This is a big problem I have with my government in general. I do think the republicans this term are mostly crooks. They do need to go. I am not happy with most anything they've done.

...except the resergance in gun rights.

Why does it have to be an either/or thing?

I wish the Democrats started to "get it"

Restoration War.

It's long past due.

Last year at Camp Perry you could get Rock River stripped lowers for 75.00 each if you bought two. I'm going to see if that deal is available again and look at their AR10 lowers as well.
Plus, I might buy a Garand collection while I am there. The yearly limit is 12.
Of course the only thing I have a use for is a Rock River hardball CMP 1911 to shoot pistol matches with.
Sheesh.

It would be ok if we could count on some good Republicans to fillibuster any BS gun laws attempts by the Dems.

It's too bad there arent'any real libertarian conservatives to vote for.

It would also be nice if Bush would veto something once in a while.

Since assault weapon bans can only technically apply to interstate commerce, I'm hoping that when the American people fail again at choosing good leaders this fall, my state (New Hampshire, with all of these crazy libertarians here :P) will have the balls to encourage the Sigarms factory in Exeter to do lots of in-state sales.

Well, technically such sales are completely out of the scope of any federal requirement, including FFL transfers, NICS, any paperwork, etc.

Sorry Matt, but you have wishful thinking. After Raich, your intrastate idea is out the window. The USSC said that any item that could affect interstate commerce, even if never intended for interstate commerce, can be regulated. If Sig was selling intrastate, those magazines could leak into interstate and theus Congress can outlaw them. Thank the WOD for that one.

I just bought ANOTHER Saiga 12.

It is disgusting how the liberties of Americans are controlled by the hysteria of the uninformed public. I wish I could say "That will never happen, seeing as when the last AWB lapsed crime actually decreased for the first time in two years." I wish I could say "that will never happen, people are finally starting to grow weary of the sensationalist vomit spewing from the mouth of the liberal media." I wish I could say those things, but I can't. The truth is that your prediction is actually very likely.

I'm a Democrat and a former vice-chair of my local party. I've worked on more campaigns than I can even count and I've been to local, CD and state conventions. I can't think of a single instance in the last 6 years of my political involvement when anyone in the party here in Virginia so much as mentioned the phrase 'gun control.' They just don't want any more of it. It's one of those special interests that kind of got tacked on through the 1990's but never had any real meaning to most of our base. Here in VA, we know that the reason why we've been winning state elections since 2000 is largely that people know we're gonna keep our hands off of their guns. Hell, I'm an NRA member myself. State parties all over the country have been watching VA and using us as a model for success. Being gun-friendly is the key to that success and everyone knows it.

The bottom line is that you shouldn't be too heartbroken if we take the House back in November (which is about even odds at this point). The vast majority of us don't want any more gun laws and if Nancy Pelosi insists on bringing it up we'll tell her where to shove it (she's on pretty thin ice with most of us anyhow).

By the way, at least 50% of the Democrats I know own a firearm and many of them shoot regularly. And yes, we know that it's only an 'assault weapon' if it's selective fire. Otherwise it's just another rifle with some convenient features.

I am a straight guy living in San Francisco. I am glad that several gays do not buy the Left Wing anti-gun propaganda. As to a switch in congress in november, 2006--I am not so sure that will occur. People still trust the GOP for overall world conflicts (altho fewer than 50 % specifically on Iraq)--and the hezbollah conflict is just gearing up. Most Americans think in terms of not being blown up when they pull the voting lever. I hope
