UN Gun Grabber Fest A Success -- Not!

Bwahahaha

Sounds like they accomplished nothing, according to the Toronto Star:

UNITED NATIONS—As a major UN conference to tighten rules for combating the illicit gun trade ended yesterday in disarray, Canada tried to build momentum for a new gathering that would speed up international control of the weapons.

"This was total meltdown," said Anthea Lawson, spokesperson for the International Action Network on Small Arms. "Seldom have diplomats worked so hard for so few results. They've squandered an opportunity to save thousands of lives."

The conference, a five-year review of the UN's 2001 program of action to eradicate the illegal arms trade, was attended by envoys from dozens of countries. But after two weeks of talks, the devil remained in the details.

[...]

...But a glance at the documents delegates laboured over for days shows that countries crossed out so many suggestions that the results appear to be weaker than in 2001.

After the meeting, exhausted delegates, many of them looking dejected, strolled through the corridors puzzling over why the meeting went so wrong.

While some muttered that the United States' hard line on gun ownership and international regulation of ammunition was largely to blame, others said that many countries objected to clauses that would restrict their ability to buy or sell small arms.

[...]

"The program of action is still in effect and it will continue," [Chairman] Kariyawasam said. "It's unfortunate that there were differences about how to handle the issues."

Well then maybe, instead of trying to implement a world-wide government control of firearms, it should be left where it belongs -- to the discretion of each country. That way, if England wants to completely disarm their victim populace and grant criminals open season, go for it. And if the U.S. doesn't, bravo!

If rogue dictatorships want to slaughter innocents, maybe others could try arming the victims of such regimes and evening the playing field.

Interesting that many nations balk when suddenly confronted with the idea that their gun laws should be regulated by a world government body. Especially when those regulations are driven by anti-gun NGOs. Sovereignty is a tough thing to surrender. Just ask some in the European Union.

Slightly off-topic but I'm fascinated that the UN can spend more time (two weeks) worrying about rifles than they do about Iran and North Korea's nuclear ambitions. Were they in attendance at the conference? Nevermind...

YESSIR!

I couldn't agree more.

The UN doesn't have a clue when it comes to violence and mayhem. Real, that is.

But if it's perceived to be in the future - whoo boy - just watch how fast the hands start wringing each other!

Once again, the gun control folks are MISSING THE POINT: trying to control legal gun-ownership by law-abiding citizens is not going to have any effect on illegal gun use by criminals. More to the point, it will ensure that criminals will be the only folks with guns. Cracking down hard on the criminals is the way to go. But oh, wait, I forgot - the UN is protecting the Palestinians and jihadi's at the moment...

Gun Control.

It's not about guns, it's about control...

I have a copy of an internal "media relations" tract from IANSA in which they provide a number of "talking points" for their sycophants to regurgitate to any reporters they talk to. See: http://home.cogeco.ca/~akimoya/rfc/iansa.media.html

One of the points is that States have the responsibility to "respect human rights", but noticably absent is any reference to the inherent, inalienable, and sovereign right of each and every human being to keep and bear arms...

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
