$150 Dollars For A CCW Permit?

Kansas' new CCW law starts tomorrow. From the Hutchinson News (KS):

...But come Saturday, Kansas becomes the 48th state to have a concealed gun law on the books, although permits won't be issued until Jan. 1. Illinois and Wisconsin are the only states that do not allow concealed carrying of guns in any way.

It's among some 180 new laws taking effect Saturday, including tougher penalties for child molesters and imposing a minimum marriage age of 15.

Rep. Gary Hayzlett, R-Lakin, a longtime booster of concealed guns, said he has received numerous calls from Kansans wanting to know how they get permits and who does firearms training. He said he has heard of waiting lists for classes.

Hayzlett spent a decade pushing concealed guns. Some years, the idea faltered in the Legislature. Former Gov. Bill Graves vetoed it in 1997, as did Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in 2004 and again this year.

But this year, legislators overrode her veto.

She did, however, sign a bill closing from public scrutiny records of those getting concealed gun permits. That was folded into legislation, which also takes effect Saturday, addressing various shortcomings of the concealed guns law.

With the new law, a four-year gun permit may be issued by the attorney general's office to any Kansas resident who's a U.S. citizen, at least 21 years old, has no felony record, passes a background check and completes eight hours of approved training.

The four-page application will be available on the attorney general's Web site or from sheriff departments.

Applications are filled out and turned in, along with a photograph and a $150 fee, to the sheriff's office in the applicant's home county. Applications and a set of fingerprints taken by the sheriff are forwarded to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for a background check.

Man, there's a pile of hoops to jump through just to exercise your constitutional and God-given right to protect yourself. And $150 bucks is an outrageous fee. Jeez. In Vermont (and Alaska) there's none of that. Even my 4-year non-resident CCW permit for NH only cost $20 and a letter from my town constable.

By the way, in a change of subject, I noticed in the same article that they're getting tough on sex offenders. And now you have to be at least 15-years-old to marry. So... Since when is a 15-year-old mature enough to make a decision about marriage? Oh wait! Their parents or a judge have to do it for them. What is this, India? If they're young enough to be molestation victims, they shouldn't be allowed to be married. Period. I don't think anyone should be allowed to be married until they're 18 years old and then it must be entirely their own un-coerced decision. (Please don't tell me that your Aunt Bertha married when she was 16 and it lasted 125 years...)

Add to that the 8 hrs of training which will probably be given by approved instructors for around $150-$200. Jack

Yeah, but it's only marginally more than New Mexico's... $150 for the class, and $100 for the license... I need to move back to New Hampshire...

I though WV was bad... $60 to apply, $15 for the license. You also have to have a training class, which the local gun shop here does for $40. Still, $115 is a lot of money for some of us. If they'd only streamline the whole process by letting the department of motor vehicles issue permits (another marking on your drivers license) then I bet it would be a lot cheaper.

Texas is only $10 cheaper. Don't forget to include your fee for the actual training class and the price nearly doubles in our Great State.

Missouri is 'up to $100' (guess how much the 'urban' counties charge?) + training. Most classes run about $125.

Boston, Massachusetts:

$100 license application fee
$100 safety course
$195 for membership at a range/gun club
Background check
Fingerprints
Photograph
Birth certificate
Proof of range membership

Plus several hundred dollars for range time, gun rentals, and ammo to practice for the qualifying range test (which can only be taken during working hours).

And, then, IF the licensing officer feels like it, he will (eventually, 106 days in my case) issue you a license to OWN a gun.

No CCW.

Have I mentioned how much this state sucks ass?

My Aunt Bertha got married when she was 16. And she was married like 125 years.

Oh wait. Nevermind.

Tennessee's handgun carry permit costs $115. Applicants must complete a four-page application form, get photographed, fingerprinted, background checked, and show proof of completion of a certified handgun training course within the past 6 months. (Course requirement: 4 h class time, 4 h range time. Average cost: $80)

There are about a zillion things that make one ineligible for a permit. My favorite item: the fee is non-refundable, so you better read the fine print about the requirements and exclusions.

Any man that gets married given todays anti-male, anti-father legal environment, is a complete moron.

Stay single. Stay free.

Wow, we in WA have it easy: $36 + $24 fingerprint fee for the first issue, $32 for renewals, for a 5-year-term license. Plus no training requirement means you get to decide how much to spend on that aspect.

What was the previous min age for marrying there? (I got hitched at 40, my good lady is in her thirties)
