June 20, 2006Note to CommentersWe live in a world where pieces of crap insist on trying to advertise by loading our comments and trackbacks with spam. Today, I've deleted over 20 spam comments that contained "google.com" and "yahoo.com". Those strings are now banned by MT Blacklist. I'm sorry, this will inconvenience some of you who have email accounts with Yahoo or who wish to point out links from Google. I assume this latest wave of spam will subside and I will eventually allow those strings again but for now... Comments
Ah-ha! The [understandable] blocking of certaim email account addresses may explain why I have had trouble posting comments! Posted by: teqjack at June 20, 2006 09:46 PMTry akismet, worked wonders for me. Primarily for wordpress, it has been ported to other platforms, including MT. http://akismet.com/development/ In the Global War on Spam, sometimes you have to go nuclear. Collateral damage be damned. Posted by: JP at June 21, 2006 03:40 AMCan't blame you. SPAM is escalating terribly. As I am sure you know my main addy contains a banned word. The one that I am using today is non functional as it was long ago overrun by spam and I have to PAY the isp for a spam filter. However, you know the other one. Posted by: Marianne at June 21, 2006 06:05 AMJohn over at Castle Arrrgggghhh! seems to have a pretty good anti-spam setup. I think the most fun thing is that he has a reasonably prominent notice that if you post a commercial link he can decide that it's an ad and that your having posted it means you agree to his conditions. I think it's $500 / link but I'm not sure. Don't know if he's ever gotten any money out of them but he has gone after spammers. Posted by: KCSteve at June 21, 2006 12:17 PMthe comment input form disappears. Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that. By Golly, you're reading an archived post.
