May 22, 2006Michael Daly...AgainSeveral readers have brought to my attention another diatribe by NY Daily News columnist Michael Daly. I mentioned him a couple weeks ago in my Weekly Report. I guess the guy just doesn't approve of gun ownership! Anyway, he hates guns so much that he actually attended the NRA convention in Milwaukee. I'm not going to dignify all of his bias but here's one example:
Say, Daly? I understand there are car dealers all over the country selling many of the same models that -- driven by drunk drivers -- have killed thousands upon thousands of children and adults. Does that make those autos (they even advertise them on TV!!!) evil? Should we stop selling them because some of them have been misused or criminally misused? Something like 40 cops were killed last year when struck by cars while they had someone pulled over on the side of our highways. How much you want to bet that Daly drives a car? How about that Budweiser Beer Daly enjoys hefting at the local bar? How many people have abused beer -- and driven drunk, or committed a crime or act of violence or abused a spouse? How dare we allow the billboards and athletic event sponsorships by makers of such an evil product! Let's not even get into the medical costs of alcoholism or lost work hours because of it. He also blathers:
First of all, I notice he didn't ask any of the two million people who -- by simply showing a firearm -- defended or protected themselves from assault by criminals last year. He also didn't interview any Olympic shooting athletes (or millions of other target shooters such as myself) to find out if they think handguns have any real purpose other than to kill people. According to the little "bio-box" under his photo, he's "the first American-born in his family". Too bad he never studied our Constitution and learned what it means to be an American. Handguns (all guns actually) have many uses. It's our right to keep and bear them. It's his right not to. His right should not infringe on ours. Comments
Maybe he would be more comfortable going back to the country from which the rest of his family immigrated? Posted by: BobG at May 22, 2006 10:55 AMAmazing with those millions of guns there, that at least one didn't just jump up and start shooting people!! I bet that the NRA Convention was the safest place to be in Milwaukee. Has anyone checked the crime stats? Posted by: Ron at May 22, 2006 11:14 AMPerhaps Mr. Daly would have preferred to be in church in Baton Rouge, La. where everybody was unarmed. Well, all but one, and he wasn't there to worship. He killed four while shooting five at the church, kidnaped his estranged wife and fatally shot her at another location. Church is gun free, don't you know? Mr. Daly thinks this is somehow appropriate? Mr. Daly will have to go some to qualify as a jackass. Posted by: straightarrow at May 22, 2006 11:51 AMThe irony is, the Glock 17 is one of the issue pistols for the NYPD. Odds are good that Michael Daly has seen hundreds of them in and around NYC without even batting an eye... heh Posted by: dave at May 22, 2006 01:06 PMAnyone want to guess what percentage of the demand for handguns Daly thinks is "legitimate"? 10%? 1%? Less? When oh when will Massa' Daly deign to enlighten us peons as to true measure of the legitimacy of our needs? Well, maybe I should check with him next time I want to buy a handgun to make sure I have the Daly Stamp Of Approval[TM] before I purchase it. But something tells me that I already know what his answer will be... Posted by: Cliff S. at May 22, 2006 03:31 PMSpeaking of the Baton Rouge shooting, the wife previously had a restraining order. Little good that did her. The shooter was also the subject of the restraining order due to domestic violence. Gee, one would think that a restraining order and the shooter being prohibited from owning a gun would have stopped this.....and then the liberals all were gently awakened from their nappy time.... Posted by: Ron at May 22, 2006 04:11 PM"produced in far greater numbers than the legitimate demand"? Were that true, the companies would no longer be is business, no? Posted by: Mat at May 22, 2006 04:59 PMFrom the minute I saw the cover photo of the NY Daily News (yesterday), I knew that the story was going to be horribly biased (in a bad way). Let alone the fact that Daly was the author. Posted by: jaws at May 22, 2006 06:58 PMMichael Daly has been drinking the gun control kool-aid for years. This is par for the course with him and NY Daily News. Posted by: Jacob at May 23, 2006 02:13 PMthe comment input form disappears. Your comments are welcome.
