Your 2nd Choice Country: Weekend Forum

I just finished reading a moldy-oldie, John Brunner's The World Swappers and thought I'd bring it back to Earthly scale by asking you to suppose that some event happens where the United States will become uninhabitable. Never mind the reason why, it could be an asteroid strike or aliens or whatever. Not important. You have to leave the U.S. in a hurry.

All the other countries of the world open their arms to the displaced Americans. What country would you choose as your new home and why? Have fun...

Jeff, come over here!

You will miss the game though...

Well, the obvious answer would be Canada. Both of my grandfathers came from there, after all. Beyond that or, say, Australia or England, guess I'd have to think about it.

Posted by: Jay at May 20, 2006 09:37 AM

England? Where you can't own a gun?

Posted by: Jeff Soyer at May 20, 2006 09:44 AM

switzerland -- beautiful land, nice people and an "evil black rifle " is standard issue.

Posted by: David at May 20, 2006 10:10 AM

Australia. Northern region, to be exact, up where there are forests and wildlife left.

And I'd invite as many right-leaning ex-Americans along as I could. Just think of how much of a difference a few million gun enthusiasts becoming Aussie citizens could have on the resident attitudes on guns.

Canada
New Zealand
Australia
Switzerland
Netherlands

Mostly, though not necessarily, in that order.

Canada is waking up to the problems of gun control as well as socialism, and has a fairly relaxed attitude towards personal freedom. Who knows, they may end up the way the founders intended the U.S. to be. Irony does no justice to that idea.

N.Z. also, though to a lesser extent on guns.

Australia for those reasons as well as those of wolfwalker.

Switzerland for all those reasons, though learning German, (or French or Italian) would be a pain.

Netherlands, though tough on gun laws, has a very open and stable political system where change is possible. Note the current debate over immigration and toleranc towards those that seek to destroy you, which is not happeneing in much of the rest of eurabia.

All have a basically good take on private property , civil rights, and free speech, despite the soc!al!st burden, and are open to political change.

Somewhere in the wreckage of the British Empire, hopefully in the Caribbean. The Bahamas, Caymans, British Virgin Islands, Antigua, Barbados, St Kitts and/or Nevis all sound pretty appealing. Jamaica's got its share of crime, but it'd be on the list, too.

Australia, if the Caribbean is full.

Failing that, Ireland always appealed to me.

Posted by: The Colossus at May 20, 2006 03:21 PM

-Okay, the countries "welcome" us but will we qualify for citizenship & voting rights? If so a couple million of us might make Australia or Canada turn away from the antis.

Posted by: S70 at May 20, 2006 06:07 PM

Odds are anything that makes the lower 48 uninhabitable probably wouldn't affect Alaska. After all, Canada is closer to you than I am.

I'd stay in Alaska.

New Zealand. They have some gun control sentiment, but it seems to be clearing up as the idiocy of gun control has been impressed upon them. They seem to be having a sea change in that regard.

So, because they are a very friendly and nice people in an extremely physically beautiful country, I would go there.

Posted by: straightarrow at May 20, 2006 11:54 PM

If transportation is no problem, then I'd go to Ireland. Family got its start there after all.

Posted by: Alan Kellogg at May 21, 2006 12:32 AM

Already based in ireland and love it, old folks in local village don't lock their house doors (or if they do, they leave the key in for neighbours)

people are so friendly

sure it has its annoying points, like crap roads and mega high land and house prices, but great folk and such safety only a couple of hours away from dublin...

Next probably NZ, great people, fantastic mountains and much more relaxed on gun control than uk or australia

after that, probably canada or Switzerland or Italy (getting married in Italy next month in my Fiance's home village, 5 minutes from swiss border)

English is the common language spoken in Switzerland between swiss of the 4 different language groups and is second language taught in swiss schools, only problem, in european heaven, the organisation is Swiss and the lovers Italian, in european hell it's the oposite.

Lots more choices like finland; fantastic hunting, I've fantastic finnish friends and all speak excellent english and beautiful country(except for long dark winters)

australia: forget it, I don't know whether they spout more shit when they win or when they loose at sport, and their politicians are more comunist than those in a comunist country, and I've been to a few of them...

Posted by: Keith at May 21, 2006 08:11 AM

Australia. I've been there a number of times and find that it has a distinctly American West Frontier feel to it. If I had to go, that's where I'd go.

Posted by: DCE at May 21, 2006 09:21 AM

If language weren't a problem? Eastern European, former Warsaw Pact countries like Poland Czechoslavakia. They know what totalitarianism (socialism) is and want nothing more to do with it.

I actually ahd not considered the Islands down in the Caribbean. Some are a bit doubtful, like Jamaica, but others are downright nice.

But how could I forget Ireland? Lovely buch of anarchists they are. Plus they are starting to cast a baleful eye on catholic laws.

I am not sure I agree with the eastern europe idea, socialism is far from dead there, all it would take is some civil strife for them to go running back to uncle joes grave, and his smothering, putrefied, embrace.

Posted by: tomWright at May 21, 2006 06:33 PM

uh oh, comment spam?

Posted by: tomWright at May 21, 2006 10:42 PM

Yeah, eastern europe... Ireland has lots of hard working eastern europeans. We've got to know a few quite well, and they hate communism with a vengence. They really give the Irish lefties some shit: "you haven't lived under communism".

Businessmen that I know love the east europeans, you get a lot harder working, more commited and nicer east european for your money. (and the girls are stunning).

The Czechs and Poles especially have a tradition of learning that uncle Joe's occupation and purges failed to kill.

If you've a few dollars to invest, Buying property in eastern europe now could be a good bet, my gues is that the east will be the power house of europe in 10 years time.

Costa Rica: No Army, Navy, Marines or Air Force. No income tax or property tax. A flat 10% sales tax on everything. Mandatory education (10th grade?) in public schools where uniforms are mandatory to avoid class discrimination. Highest literacy rate in the Americas. (Higher than the U.S.) World class fishing and hunting and an English language national newspaper, The Tico Times. http://www.ticotimes.net/

Posted by: Walt at May 22, 2006 09:55 AM

Mandatory state education?? That'd be a turn-off for me.

I might do a little more research on Chile. Climate range is good, about anything you might want in different parts of the country. Spanish is easy to learn, compared to most european languages. I am unsure of their current laws on gun ownership, but they have fairly recently been exposed to the results of disarming the population. I would be hopefull that they won't soon repeat the mistake.

Crime is low, economy is good, and they are nearly 100% free of dependency on middle-eastern oil!

Posted by: chris at May 22, 2006 11:12 AM

Canada now that the stupid gun registry is going bye-bye. Australia second.

Posted by: Jon at May 22, 2006 05:27 PM

Well, if I couldn't go to Alaska I'd be inclined to do like the guys who recommended Eastern Europe.

Or go them one better: Kazakhstan or Mongolia! Mongolia is the freest place in the world except possibly Alaska. (I have spent two months there). A bit bleak, but no more so than parts of Montana...

Southern Kazakhstan is more beautiful and civilized-- I ate better in Almaty than anywhere I have been other than (gulp) France. The Tian Shan range to the south, higher than the Rockies, is visible from that city, which is in the foothills. Trout streams go through the city and flow into the steppes to the north. GREAT hunting and fishing. Falconry, sighthounds. And gun stores almost as good as those here in New Mexico, with everything from SKS's to Beretta doubles! (I do think handguns are more controlled though).

They like America and distrust China. English is probably racing German for third commonest language (after Russian and Kazakh, a kind of Turkic)-- has passed it for the young-- and most of the signs in Almaty are also in English.

There are vitually no Islamists, unlike in the other Stans. I have been to a barbecue blessed by an Imam with vodka on the table and no headgear on the women-- who also drank. Lots of secularists, Russian Orthodox, Jews, and Germans-- Lutherans I think. (Stalin threw many ethnicities into the Kazakh "Briar Patch"-- about 30 ethnic German- brewed native beers!)

If I weren't poor and 56 I think I'd go-- and if it gets worse here (Hilary, anyone?) I just might!
