New Brady Bunch Boss

The Brady Bunch has a new -- Republican -- chief. From WISH TV:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. Former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke is to become president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, one the country's most prominent anti-gun groups.

The group is to formally make that announcement today, making the three-term Republican mayor a G-O-P advocate for what it typically seen as a Democratic stance.

[...]

Jim Brady's wife, Sarah, says Helmke's Republican credentials were an asset and could help build a consensus of support on the issue.

Helmke says gun control is a public safety issue and shouldn't be considered solely a political matter. Helmke was the Republican nominee for U-S Senate in 1998, but lost to Democrat Evan Bayh.

Actually, he says a lot more than that! From the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette:

Paul Helmke, newly hired president of the main group advocating some restrictions on gun sales and ownership, doesn’t think the Second Amendment demands a totally hands-off approach by the government.

The amendment, he said, “starts out ‘a well regulated militia.’ It obviously contemplates some sort of regulation. We see the need for balance in the First Amendment even though it quite clearly says Congress shall make no law (abridging the freedom of speech or of the press). But then we talk about libel, obscenity, don’t yell fire in a crowded theater, national security.

“We have a Fourth Amendment and other amendments that talk about due process and search and seizure yet we say that at times of national security, there’s got to be some balancing.

“Clearly when you’re talking about a well-regulated whatever, you’ve got to use some common sense,” he said.

Actually, "well regulated" referred to marksmanship of the militia, to training. The militia itself is composed of citizens, whose right to bear arms shall not be infringed.

Anyway, sounds like this flunky, a RINO, will simply bring more of the same blather the Brady Bunch is already known for. Manipulated statistics from unidentified sources, calls for another AWB, handgun bans, etc. Never met a gun control measure they didn't find to be "sensible"...

Quote: “starts out ‘a well regulated militia.’ It obviously contemplates some sort of regulation". Okay then, regulate the militia but it still says the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. I believe in the definition of "regulated" to mean trained and disciplined but to each his own.

So ... is someone going to start an effort in Indiana to kick him out of the GOP for not adhering to the plaform?

Posted by: Kristopher at May 4, 2006 11:05 AM

Then we'd have to kick out Rudy G, NYC Mayor Michael Blowhard, George Pataki, Sen. John McCain... Actually, not a bad idea now that you mention it...

Add the gun control loving, Socialized medicine advocating, governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney to that list!

The rules really are simple. So, anytime anyone says "reasonable" or "rational" as a preface to regulating or restricting the possession of arms, remember what they are really calling for is the breaking of the law.

The highest law of the land says "shall not be infringed". Couldn't be plainer. Alternate interpretations are merely the mewling justifications of criminals for their illegal acts and plans.

It is no different than the rapist who says "She was so pretty, she made me do it. It's her fault."
The same moral plane is at the heart of both reprehensible endeavors. No amount of explanation or alternative definitions can legitimize the activity.

I don't think militias back then were massive organizations that some people envision. The National Guard would be far too large to be considered one. You'd probably know everyone in your local militia.

Here in Indiana, that commie tried for the senate and was soundly defeated on his gun stance. I'm glad the brady's got him. Pond scum should all way float together.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
