A Defeat For Civil Rights in Arizona

A bill that would have prohibited law enforcement from seizing or prohibiting firearms in an emergency was vetoed by the Arizona Governor. An attempt to override the veto failed. From Arizona Central:

The Republican-led Arizona Senate narrowly voted against overriding Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano's veto of a bill that would have prohibited the imposition of firearms restrictions during a declared state of emergency.

"This is America. This is not a police state," said Sen. Ron Gould, R-Lake Havasu City. "This is the governor by her veto trying to take her authority over the Second Amendment."

The vote on the rare override attempt was 19-9, just one vote short of the required 20 votes, two-thirds of the 30-member Senate.

[...]

Napolitano's April 17 veto letter said that she supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms but believed the bill went too far because it opened the door for "serious consequences."

She cited an example of government officials being barred from ordering that an ammunition cache be moved from the path of a forest fire.

What a truely lame "example". Apparently Gov. Napolitano missed the actions that took place during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

The Democrats who refused to vote for the override -- some said they were skeerd to "tie the governor's hands" -- should be tied-up themselves, tarred-and-feathered, and voted out of office for refusing to enforce the civil rights of gun owners.

Be nice to have a national data base of people to not help during an emergency. You need a ride to the hospital? You voted against freedom, so tough shit. Jack

Napolitano should be hung out to dry.

If there's a civil emergency, "somebody has to take control in that situation," said Dem. Senator Robert Cannell.

There's your problem right there - the dem ideology that the goverment must be in control, not the individual.

Very good comments Jack and Ben. I agree 100% with both. The dems have always been against people taking personal responsibility for themselves.

It's just real hard to take a gun from someone that knows you're coming and he doesn't want you to have it. She has told them she is coming or sending some poor soon to be dead sonofabitch that just wanted retire and get his pension.

19+9 = 28. Who were the missing 2?

What a stupid example! Ammunition (barring the highly restricted stuff) isn't explosive, and unless chambered in a firearm doesn't comprise a danger to anyone outside a few yards radius. It's also a hell of a lot less flammable, or dangerous when burning, than most household items - fuels, furniture, carpet, cleaning chemicals, etc.

Anyway, I wasn't aware that people fighting forest fires would do so smack dab in the middle of a burning house, which is about the only way for any quantity of ammo to be a danger to them.

Of course, it's not about that. It's about government officials not wanting to "have their hands tied" by the Constitution.

Find you Senator and write to either congratulate them for their vote or to ask them why they voted against your civil rights.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
