The Australian Slippery Slope

Australia already has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. Centerfire rifles and shotguns are banned (with rare exceptions for some sporting purposes) and handguns are restricted to sporting club members with an arduous, multiple-stage licensing procedure and highly regulated storage requirements. Naturally, criminals bypass all these laws and licenses.

And today, Prime Minister Howard is proposing further restrictions:

THE Prime Minister, John Howard, has foreshadowed further restrictions on guns, saying nobody should have firearms unless they are an essential part of their job.

Speaking before tomorrow's 10th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre, Mr Howard stressed his loathing of guns and said he was particularly concerned at the proliferation of pistols since rapid-fire rifles and shotguns were banned.

[...]

"We just do not need guns," he said.

"I don't think Australians need guns unless it's your job or you're in genuine need of protection." Only police, security officers, farmers and legitimate sporting shooters should have them, he said.

Since "legitimate sporting shooters" are pretty much the only ones who have them now, and only one-tenth of one percent of illegal guns seized by cops there came from (read: Were stolen from) legal owners, what is there left to ban?

The true colors of gun control advocates shines through during an interview with Rolande Browne of the Australian National Coalition for Gun Control this morning by reporter Barney Porter on the ABC AM Show:

BARNEY PORTER: What should be done today then?

ROLAND BROWNE: Well, at least for eight years we've been calling for a ban on semi-automatic hand-guns. If people want to use semi-automatic, sorry, if people want to use hand-guns for target shooting, they should be confined to single shot hand guns.

Virtually all Olympic and Commonwealth Games events allow participation with those firearms. The only way to ensure ongoing safety in Australia is to bring hand-guns into line with rifles.

If people can't have a semi-automatic rifle for target shooting, they should not be allowed to have a semi-automatic hand-gun.

Incidentally, only 2 1/2% of homes throughout the Commonwealth of Australia (all states) have a legal pistol so we're talking a miniscule number of handguns. There's no telling -- of course -- how many thugs have them.

Does anyone really think the goal of US gun control groups and anti-gun politicians is any different?

People say to me "why do you carry on a daily basis"? I say it's part of my job. "What's that"? To protect myself,my family and my country. If you want to see me in action, screw with any of the above. That shuts them up. Jack

Any aussies reading this, now is your wake up call.

You might have one of the most urbanised populations in the world, but that is no excuse for rolling over and accepting this shit.

Take a look at that third world dictatorship you share a monarch with.

Semi auto rifles and all breech loading pistols are banned, the international pistol team trains in switzerland.

yeah, and armed crime (with all sorts of pistols & SMGs)continues to rise, the laws don't affect the law breakers.

You are far more likely to be mugged robbed or burgled in Britain than you are in the US

and the bastards doing it are less likely to be caught, convicted, go to jail, or spend a good long time in jail for it.

The shooting guys (and girls) there were too class ridden and too busy trying to sell other shooters down the line to try to take the focus off their own little patch

At the end the various organisations kept "a respectful silence" while the antis filled the vacum and dominated the debate (with lies and slander)

stop fucking your wallabys and get read up on john lott and gary kleck,s books and get active,
otherwise you've already lost the battle.

now go for it!!!

Canada,England and Australia are basically screwed in that they don't have an NRA. Jack

Posted by: Jack Lorenz at April 27, 2006 11:48 AM

They don't have rights either. All their rights are bestowed by government, which means the people don't own them.

Too many here in our country are not aware that all the rights here are ours and we permit government. If we don't make people understand this we will become as rape likely as the Aussies.

Posted by: straightarrow at April 27, 2006 01:44 PM

Many Americans believe the Constitution "grants" us rights, rather than enumerates them and prohibits government from infringing upon them. Not a particularly subtle distinction, it seems, to me, but basically meaningless to nearly all lefties. And even if they did accept that distinction, they'd argue (as they already do) that the rights in the COnstitution are "obsolete" and "out of date."

Oddly enough, it never occurs to them that by that logic, the First Amendment does not apply to the Internet, telephones, television, and radio.

Just to clarify, it's not 'centerfire' rifles that are banned, it's 'semiauto' rifles.

Posted by: Kirk Parker at April 28, 2006 04:09 AM

"Don't have an NRA" Britain does, and it sold semi auto rifle shooters and pistol shooters down the river.

Why?

cos it represented a very limited section of target rifle shooters, and thought that by sacrificing others, it would be safe.

Never be fooled. "war" can seldom be delayed to your advantage,

each little step sounds reasonable to the dis-interested public, but the creeping erosion will destroy your rights as surely as one massive ban.

get yourselves united, get your facts together and get campaigning in public, or end up under british style dictatorship

your choice

As peasant says, "Never be fooled." Same in the U.S. - these people are like terrorists/jihadists; relentless and will NEVER give up:

The founder of HCI, Nelson T. "Pete" Shields, laid out the organ-
ization's strategy on page 53 of the July 26, 1976 New Yorker
Magazine:

"We're going to have to take one step at a time, and the first step is
necessarily -- given the political realities -- going to be very
modest."

"Our ultimate goal -- total control of handguns in the United States
-- is going to take time. ... The first problem is to slow down the
increasing number of handguns being produced.... The second problem is
to get handguns registered. And the final problem is to make the
possession of all handguns and all handgun ammunition -- except for
the military, policemen, licensed security guards, licensed sporting
clubs, and licensed gun collectors -- totally illegal."

Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
