Bush Sr. on Gun Control

CBS radio interviewed George H W Bush a couple days ago, reminiscing about the attempt on Ronald Reagain's life 25 years ago. While he's still rather -- inarticulate -- in some ways (like son like father) the interview by Peter Maer did contain this quote:

Maer: Have the events of that day affected your own feelings on the issue of gun control?

Bush: Nope. It hasn't changed a bit.

Maer: Why?

Bush: Affected in what way? I think there are a lot of handgun regulations. I don't even know whether this violated regulations at the time. It might well have. Certainly it comes to registration. I love the story about when I went down to register my guns when I was in Congress, I think it was. It was the last day for registration. I went down there. The guy was sitting at his desk all alone, nobody in there. I said I'm here to declare my .410 and whatever, my .22 or something. I said, "Are you getting a lot of people registering?" And he said, "No. It's only a bunch of suckers like you from northwest Washington that are in here." I've not been a big advocate of more gun control and that didn't change my mind. Now, Mrs. Brady became, for understandable reasons, became a great pioneer in trying to do more and I haven't kept up with what the rules are there now.

Is he for or against registration? He's not an advocate for more gun control but praises Sarah Brady. Just what the heck IS he saying here? Anyway, it caught my eye. Maybe you can figure it out...

I don't know if he praised her. Sounded more to me like he acknowledged the fact of her and tried to show he understood the emotional, in not rational reasons she has done what she's done. If he had praised her, would he not most probably agree with her? I mean to say, that if he believes his own postion to be rational, and it seems certain he does, without a direct statement to the contrary, he must believe her view is irrational. I think he may have been trying to appear empathetic without endorsing her.

It is hard to tell, though, as he is pretty weak in his support for 2A. So, I could definitely be wrong, Naaah, what're the odds of that?

Most of us (well I do anyway) spend our lives trying to look smart and keep getting caught out as dumb. Daddy Bush seems to manage to do the oposite. Talk about being all things to all people.....

How about a game of bullshit?
here's how it works, you have a card with all the political and business buzz words on it (you know, the ones that mean nothing but get the 30 odd percent who can't make up their minds to decide the outcome of our elections for the rest of us?).

At a political or business meeting you cross the words off as you hear them and the first one with a full horizontal, vertical or diagonal line jumps up, holding card aloft and shouts; "BULLSHIT" as loud as they can.

I'm not sure whether Senior was praising Sarah Brady or not. We could chalk his confusing-ness up to the fact that he's getting up there in years, but then again, he talked like that when he was President.

He's a classic NE republican ... if he ran for office in WY or AK, the democrats there wouldn't nominate him, since he is too far to the left to get WY or AK democrats to vote for him.

In his home state, hr fits right in with the local republicans.

He probably really believes that the purpose of the gun lobby is to support hunters ...

Seems to me that the "suckers" comment meant he understood that only the law-abiding will abide by the law. Perhaps he understands that when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have them.

As for his comments on Ms. Brady, I wonder if he worked closely with Mr. Brady? And I wonder how much contact he had with her and the Brady familiy after the shooting. Just a thought.

JP,

Yes, he worked closely with and knew Jim Brady well before the shooting. I didn't see this as praising brady's efforts to eliminate guns. . . its pretty clear with his sucker comment what he things of gun control . . . rather I think he was expressing his understanding of why she feels the way she does as well as an appreciation for the success she has had in creating a huge organization (like her or not, its no easy thing to turn a small idea into such a big money maker and political hot topic).

The man never could put a sentence together. It is really no surprise that he lost to Slick Willie. I still remember what he said when the Berlin Wall came down - THE most important day in the Cold War after the Cuban Missle Crisis. He said, "We'll have to see what happens."

He's the classic rich-boy statist. Push him hard enough on it, and he'll say (in round-about PC-speak, of course) that there are "some people" out there who should be disarmed... meaning, in the immortal words of Leon Helmley, the "little people".

Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
