Women & Shooting Sports: Positive Story on Today

I'm having a fainting spell! A few minutes ago on NBC's Today Show they did a feature on how women are increasingly becoming interested in the shooting sports. They showed women target shooting (and one with what looked like an AR-15) and pointed out that participation by them is up 11% this year. They showed women skeet shooting. Duck hunting. They reported that women are buying gun gear clothing at record levels...

There were scenes of women proudly showing off their targets and that they were having FUN.

I think I caught a few comments by expert firearms instructor Il Ling New, too. I posted about her here regarding an SF Gate feature. Way cool.

And through it all, not one negative comment on firearms.

There's no link to or mention yet of the segment on the Today Show website but it does usually take a couple days for those to show up. I think I found my feature story for tomorrow's chat with Cam.

Just when I thought I couldn't be surprised by MSM anymore. What's next, a positive story on the war in Iraq?

Those on the West Coast ought to be able to view it shortly, it comes up at around 8:35 AM or so.

They did a very good job in presenting women hunters, target shooters (both pistol and shotgun) in a very respectable manner. The segment lasted only about a minute and a half, but was replete with statistics on the ever increasing numbers of women becoming involved with the shooting sports, and the boon they’ve become to the retailers who have sought to accommodate them in their shopping needs.

I write this to you in the hopes that all of us can spread this story to other people, both here and around the country. This is the first chance we’ve had in a long time to be able to write a major TV news network and laud them for reporting on anything gun related in a fair manner. To not take this opportunity to do so would be to miss an opportunity that comes along once every 10 years or so. I believe the old adage of “making hay while the sun shines” is perfectly applicable in this instance.

I strongly encourage you, in your own words, to write NBC and let them know that you liked this story a lot, interspersed with a paragraph or two about how much you have disliked their unfairly biased reporting of all things pertaining to guns, in the past. Perhaps, if enough of us write to them, they will see the errors of their ways, and will make a concerted effort to bring about how they look at, or report on, all things gun related. Then again…

I hate to burst anyone's bubble here, but I suspect the reason NBC treated this story so favorably is that it involved WOMEN shooters. They can stereotype the guys as a bunch of redneck slobs, but they'd come off as pretty unchivalrous if they tried that approach with the ladies.

We need to keep the pressure on the MSM to continue covering shooters of BOTH sexes in a more fair and favorable light. It is, however, always a good thing when women -- and gays -- are shown as people who own firearms. Especially when we make it clear that we must depend upon our own weapons for protection.

I agree, this was a story because it was women doing the shooting.

On a side note, I had Il Ling New as an instructor when I took Gunsite's 250 class in August 2003. Steve Skubinna, if you're reading this, don't wait any longer. It's worth it. I took the above mentioned class on PCS leave.

It was worth it.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
