January 08, 2006Yet Another Call For National Gun Control! This one in today's New York Newsday comes from a mother who lost her son to gun violence. I'm sorry about that but freedom is not free and our Bill of Rights are not negotiable. She writes:
I see. So lets scrap all state gun laws and just have a national one. One which, let me guess, matches those of NYC? Where it's almost impossible to legally purchase or carry a handgun? And she wants to make it illegal for anyone to transport a firearm across any state line? That will make for rather boring national marksmanship events and probably prevent our Olympic shooting team from ever competing again. Oh, forget about hunting anywhere in the country except your home state. Sure, a lot of states will lose a fortune in out-of-state hunting licenses but it's all to help NYC control it's criminals. Of course, with one national set of gun laws, wouldn't that require all states to honor whatever state carry permit someone has? Oops! No state permits. Just a "national permit". Cool. Then I can carry anywhere. But I can't cross state lines... This is making my head spin. Comments
I think they are right, we should just have one national law. A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. Posted by: Brass at January 8, 2006 10:33 AMI don't see the word "nation" in your quote, Brass, just the word "state." Posted by: Rick C at January 8, 2006 02:13 PMPeople need to realise, that as precious as life is, there are things such as freedom, that are even more so. Posted by: timmy at January 8, 2006 03:20 PMYou are correct Rick, thereby making all the state laws a bunch of crap. Once again for the learning impaired. This refers to an individual right and there are no ifs, ands, or buts about my right to keep and bear arms in any manner I see fit to. Any law that is passed that infringes on that right without first amending the Constitution is just plain wrong. Posted by: Brass at January 8, 2006 03:24 PMI agree with half of what she says, "abolish all state gun laws". That would be a good start. Posted by: Joe Huffman at January 9, 2006 03:13 AM"abolish all state gun laws." Please! Can we start with California? I'd go with one national law, Florida or Arizona style - somewhere there's Class-III stuff in circulation. Posted by: -keith in mtn. view at January 9, 2006 07:41 PMForget Florida/Arizona style. Give me Vermont style with no licenses, permits, or anything else. Just a plain, unadulterated Right. Posted by: Jeff Soyer at January 10, 2006 04:32 AMthe comment input form disappears. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that. By Golly, you're reading an archived post.
