Speaking of Scum-Bag Judges...

A mutant repeatedly rapes a young girl over a period of four years starting when she was 7-years-old. A proper punishment would have been the firing squad. Instead, a Vermont judge who "no longer believes in punishment" hands the mutant a blistering 60-days in jail! From WCAX-TV (VT):

There was outrage Wednesday when a Vermont judge handed out a 60-day jail sentence to a man who raped a little girl many, many times over a four-year span starting when she was seven.

The judge said he no longer believes in punishment and is more concerned about rehabilitation.

Prosecutors argued that confessed child-rapist Mark Hulett, 34, of Williston deserved at least eight years behind bars for repeatedly raping a littler girl countless times starting when she was seven.

But Judge Edward Cashman disagreed explaining that he no longer believes that punishment works.

"The one message I want to get through is that anger doesn't solve anything. It just corrodes your soul," said Judge Edward Cashman speaking to a packed Burlington courtroom. Most of the on-lookers were related to a young girl who was repeatedly raped by Mark Hulett who was in court to be sentenced.

The sex abuse started when the girl was seven and ended when she was ten. Prosecutors were seeking a sentence of eight to twenty years in prison, in part, as punishment.

This begs the question of course, of what the hell Judge Cashman is still doing on the bench since part of his "job description" is to mete out punishments to the crumb-bums who terrorize society.

Stories such as this, and the previous post here about the Brooklyn judge, and mutant-enablers like Marion Barry -- these incidents have got to ruin the morale of cops everywhere. Why the hell should they bother catching the bad guys if these ineffectual judges are going to let violent criminals off with a slap-on-the-wrist?

Putting aside the justifiable outrage of victims and their families, I think the police should be furious at these judges and should picket their courthouses demanding that they be removed from their respective benches.

If repeately raping a seven-year-old girl doesn't call for serious jail time, just what the fuck does?

Update: Over at 802-Online, they don't like the tone of the comments for this post.

Update 1/11: Two things. First, I believe it is well and good that people vent their frustrations and outrage at the lenient sentence. However, the two most recent comments contained the judge's work address, home address and home phone. That is where I draw the line here. I do not condone vigilantism.

As someone who was molested myself when I was nine-years-old by a dermatologist who apparently thought that the root of my dandruff problem lay in my private parts --and we're not talking about "coughing" here--, I am shocked by the non-sentence of Cashman but Alphecca will not be used to further either visits or harrassing phone calls to him. I might be outraged but I am also a rigid believer in the law, flawed as it is at times. I sympathize. I understand the sentiments and anger but...

To that end and to prevent any more such nonsense, I've closed the comments on this post.

Secondly: There seem to be plenty of apologists for Cashman's sentence. Having done some research on the web, it would seem that depending on which study you read (and all of them admit to a lack of serious research themselves), the recidivism rate for child molesters who DO receive treatment is between 5 1/2% - 32%. That is for NON-incestuous incidents which is lower -- presumably because the daughter or son grew up.

What I DO know is that if Hulett gets treatment, there's a chance he will rape another child. If Cashman had thrown Hulett in jail for 20 years, there would have been no chance he would rape another child for 20 years. What we DO know, now, is that Hulett admitted to sexually assaulting this very young child 50 times! I'd say that regardless of any mistakes by the prosecution, the evidence points to Hulett being a repeat offender. That's my opinion but then this blog is composed of my opinions.

Lastly: There has been some suggestion in some quarters that we hateful law-and-order simpletons just don't understand the "nuances" of the case. I suggest they visit a support group for rape and molestation victims, with their reporter's notebook or movie camera, and ask the women there if there was anything "nuanced" about being raped.

And isn't it interesting that women's groups have been fighting for years to get women to come forward and report rape, to destigmatize the victim and bury the old stereotypes about rape victims -- that it wasn't really rape or that they were asking for it --, to bring the subject and seriousness of rape to the public eye and obtain justice for rape victims, and yet some would then try to ameliorate the anger that many of us feel towards a judge who "doesn't believe in punishment"?

What "nuance" can there be when a piece of shit like Hulett molests a 7-year-old girl 50 times? Over 4-years?

Come on: She dressed provocatively and was asking for it? Or maybe She lied about her age in an internet chat-room? How about Her mouth said 'no' but her eyes said 'yes'?

There is no "nuance" to raping a 7-year-old. Period. Cashman could have given this mutant the maximum sentense AND required that THEN he would -- as a condition of release -- have to have sex-offender treatmen. Instead, this "tough sentencing judge" basically said, "fuck the community, I don't believe in punishment and I want him to get treatment now". Even though treatment doesn't always work. And even though, in my First Amendment protected opinion of people in the public eye, I think Hulett will offend again. A pox on both their houses.

This judge needs to be removed, right now. If someone SHOPLIFTED repeatedly over 3 years, I'd expect them to get more than 60 days in jail. I'd also like to hear someone try and explain how this sick scum is going to be 'rehabilitated'. Hopefully, they jailers will throw his ass in general population and he'll recieve some real justice from other criminals.

How sad is that, that we hope other convicts will do the right thing?

Posted by: eric at January 5, 2006 08:14 AM

I actually like this decision as it gives the family the opportunity - in 60 days - to do the right thing.

Posted by: countertop at January 5, 2006 08:43 AM

Interestingly enough, I had the same thought as countertop...

'Cuz if, God forbid, that were my little girl, I'd want the sonofabitch out on the street ASAP - my long range shooting skills aren't up to par, but my shotgunning skills are excellent...

Posted by: Jay G at January 5, 2006 08:52 AM

and the advantage of course is that ballistics are impossible with 00 buckshot.....

Posted by: Rorschach at January 5, 2006 09:26 AM

Long range skills hell. If I were this girls father I would want to feel his bones break as I slammed him with a baseball bat.

What does this judge think? Does he think?

Are judges elected in Vermont?
Can they be recalled?
Can this be appealed by the prosecutors?
Can his home be picketed by protestors?

Can Vermont enforce immigraton controls against New Yorkers/Jerseyans? Sounds like the liberal infection they suffer from has infected Vermont along with the hordes of urban ex-pats migrating north.

Wow.

Just...wow.

Jay, that Mosin-Nagant sure hit what I was aiming at the one time I tried her out. I don't see a long-distance shot being a problem.

While I whole heartedly agree that a perfect world would offer the family a chance to take bat-to-dirtbag, the reality of the situtation puts her family in a horrible situation. There is no way this can stand. Since the courts are not going to provide justice, someone else will...and then that person is screwed. Two innocent lives (directly) f-ed up beyond belief at the hands of two assholes.

What a wonder freaking time.

I think a little "frontier justice" is in order here. When this POS gets out and does this again, and statistics show that he probably will, hunt him down, castrate him, stake him down and cover him with honey, and leave him to the ants. Then find the judge and do the same to him for being an accomplice.

Posted by: Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner at January 5, 2006 10:36 AM

While it is fun to vent, (I do it all the time, woohoo!), just think how much good it will do your kids if you end up in the cell he should have gotten.

I know it is rare for prosecutors to appeal a sentence, but maybe they can be persuaded to do so in this case, if Vermont permits it.

Posted by: tomWright at January 5, 2006 11:12 AM

Well then.

Someone needs to shirt the perp for them ... as an act of charity.

Don't think that the forensics of a shotgun are impossible or even difficult. The empty hull and the wadding both provide clues. If you must use a gun (in this case I would be inclined to use a propane torch and a wire brush) use something no one knows you have which you purchased 20 years ago from someone that is no longer alive and preferably from someone out of state and you haven't purchased ammo for in several years. Of course you would not have used the gun at your normal shooting range or any location that might be associated with you or your vehicle. Don't leave shell casings behind and use a cutting torch to turn the tool into a pile of slag within an hour or two. Buy clothes, including shoes, for the exclusive use of the event in another city using cash and burn them immediately afterwards. Wear a disguise with at least a wig, hat, and glasses (different from your normal pair of glasses and untraceable to you). Walk with a noticable limp while in your disguise and/or hold an arm in an odd way to indicate an injury. Tell no one (this is the most difficult part for most criminals). If you need automobile transportation pay cash for a $500 car in a private sale in another state while wearing your disguise. Don't fill it with gas at a gas station with video cameras. Use a gas can you filled with while in your usual car. Afterwards set the interior of the car on fire to eliminate the DNA you left behind. Of course you are wearing gloves but becareful that you don't scratch your nose, pick up oil on the glove and transfer that oil to some surface that will be found such as a shell casing or a gas cap. If the police ever want to talk to you-- all you tell them is to talk to your lawyer.

This message should self-destruct in 10 seconds after you have read it.

Self defense? If someone sees Mark Hulett near, NEAR,(five to ten feet)a girl, he has the right and the duty to defend her by blowing Mark's brains out of his skull.
As for the Judge, where is the local militia.

This is the year. I just heard on the radio, in connection to that sleaze bag, but not the sleaziest, lobbyist Jack Abramoff, that Indians(native Americans) are exempt from the McCain-Feingold gut the first amendment act.
That is unconstitutional AND CRIMINAL.
This year the second American revolution starts.
BRING IT ON!!
MOLON LABE!!!

After reading the comments posted here I feel a little better about this terrible story. If people reading this blog feel this way about that evil polluter, then so do folks who are more in a postition to deal with him....and the judge of course.

Something must be done. Can we impeach a judge? We can not just sit back and do nothing. We gave him this power and now we must take it back. Our children need to be protected from criminals and judges like this.

Posted by: Patty at January 6, 2006 10:21 PM

Judge Cashman is known for going easy on sexual predators. Here is a link to a story about a child stalker and Judge Cashman defending him at the end of the article. Click Here. Somehow, some way this man needs to be impeached and disbarred so he can never practice law again.

How about, for a change of pace, we put down all of these loud and nasty firearms and handle this scumbag as our forefathers would have: a sturdy tree and a length of rope.

In the event the rope breaks or a suitable tree can't be found, then the SOB can be sent to Hell by 'nine grams in the back of the head'...

"Vengence is mine," sayeth the Lord. Let's leave it to him. It's nice to vent our outrage here but let's remember that WE are the law-abiding. God will prepare the special place in hell for them.

Posted by: Jeff Soyer at January 9, 2006 05:07 PM

This is a crime on the part of Judge Cashman. Any SOB who rapes a child should get the Death Penalty. And not in 10-20 years while tax payers support him in prison. I like the way it was done in the Old West---sentence carried out at Sunrise the next morning.

Here is Judge Cashman's address if you care to send him a little love note as I did. I congratulated him on receiving my first ASSHOLE OF THE YEAR AWARD for 2006.

Now how do we citizens from all over the US, impeach this immoral creature of Satan?

hey everyone don't waste all your seething anger for cashman on blogs when you can write, call, or go visit the judge at:
