How's This For Anti-Gun Bias?

An editorial today in the Wausau Daily Herald (WI) says this:

Happy new year! Have a gun!

That's the Wisconsin Legislature's gift to citizens of this state. Members hope this will be the year they can ram through a bill that would allow residents to carry hidden pistols, stun guns and other weapons.

Gov. Jim Doyle has said he will veto the bill, as he did the last attempt to pass this reckless and dangerous law. This time, though, the Republican majority says it has lured enough Democrats with last-minute amendments that they can override a veto.

Heaven help us.

Well actually, allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons is a far more reliable means of self-defense than relying on someone in Heaven to come to your aid, such as when:

MILWAUKEE - A 50-year-old Milwaukee man was dragged from a car he was driving and severely beaten Monday night by a group of at least 15 teens and young men after he honked at them to get out of the street they were blocking.

Witnesses said the suspects jumped off cars and did flips onto the man's head, laughed and blasted music as if they were having a "block party."

The victim, identified by family as Samuel McClain, suffered "severe head trauma" and was in critical condition late Tuesday at Froedtert Lutheran Memorial Hospital in Wauwatosa, Wis., a hospital spokesman said. His family was gathered at Froedtert, awaiting word on McClain's fate. It was unclear whether he will survive.

While there's no guarantee that if McClain had been armed he could have scared off the mutants, I'm sure he'd have had a better chance than appealing to Heaven. It's obvious there were no cops around to protect him from the savages. Yet the Wausau Daily Herald would deny him the protection that a concealed carry gun could have afforded.

Then, after admitting that applicants for a CCW permit would be required to be sober when carrying, pass firearms training, and not carry in bars, school zones or other government buildings, the un-named editorial writer asks:

So here's the question: If permit-holders are safe and reliable enough to be handed permits, why aren't they safe everywhere? Why can they not go into the federal courthouse in Madison, but they can wander into the Wausau Center mall or through the heart of downtown?...

Of course the question was rhetorical and they have their own answer but I'm thinking, "Good question!" I believe that if someone has demonstrated that they are law-abiding then they should be allowed to carry anywhere. Again, since the cops can't be everywhere, and neither can Heaven, I say, "Let them carry their gun every place they go!"

But that's just me...

I'm a lesbian gun-owner in Arizona. I thoroughly agree with the Pink Pistols' motto that "armed gays don't get bashed."

I find the condescending attitude of people who want to take away our guns not only insulting but threatening. Last night on cable, I happened to catch the misty-eyed, romantic ending of the film The American President. Of course, part of the great moral stand Annette Bening urged Michael Douglas into making was that of taking away everyone's guns. I can assure you that my misty eyes dried up real fast.

Why is it that these people claim they support rights for gays and women, yet they want to leave us defenseless against violent crime? The police aren't going to defend us. By the time they arrive on the scene, all that's left for them to do is mop up the blood.

Lori, it isn't just gays and women they want unarmed, it's everybody. None of these handwringing ninnies has ever explained, so far as I know, why they despise their fellow citizens so much.

I didn't mean to imply they only want gays and women unarmed. My implication was that these bleeding-heart lefties claim SPECIAL COMPASSION for gays and women. They assure us they are our FRIENDS. I was simply commenting on the hypocrisy of the Barbra Streisand crowd in general.

It is one of the (many) reasons I am no longer a Democrat. The Dems are insincere about most of what they tell us. I have come to agree, in any case, with the Libertarian Party in its refusal to favor any special group over any other. To them, rights are the same for everybody, and that's quite good enough for me.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
