But There's No Slippery Slope...

First they registered our guns. Then they banned some of them. Now, as you've read, some in Canada want to ban all handguns:

Prime Minister Paul Martin will propose a ban on most handguns in Canada, CanWest News Service has learned.

Sources say Martin, who will make the election campaign announcement this morning, wants to choke off the supply of handguns in this country, particularly guns brought into the country illegally and those sold on the black market.

There will be some exemptions, including maintaining the right for police to carry handguns. The prime minister is also expected to announce a significant increase in resources for police to deal with the ban.

The Liberals say the thinking behind this crime strategy is that if no one is allowed to have a handgun in Canada, policing authorities will be in a better position to act on anyone who has a handgun or attempts to transport or sell a handgun.

Well of course! If they ban all handguns then there won't be any, right? Nobody will smuggle one in or refuse to turn theirs in because that would be illegal, right?

Not everyone is amused:

Liberal Leader Paul Martin's pledge to ban handguns is getting a cool reception in parts of Saskatchewan, a province that has been leery about past moves to control firearms.

Regina gun dealer Darryl Schemenauer, who also collects guns and target-shoots, says banning handguns would change his life.

He says he could lose a lot of his business at his store, TNT Gunworks. He also worried he could lose some of his prized possessions, like his hand-built Colt handgun, worth $3,500.

"There's no chance, I think, that I'm going to hand that handgun in," he said.

Martin made the announcement earlier this week in a Toronto neighbourhood plagued by gunfire in recent months.

"Handguns will be banned," he said. "They are used to threaten people, they're used to intimidate them, they're used to kill people."

However, Saskatchewan Justice Minister Frank Quennell was not buying Martin's pitch, saying banning handguns wouldn't change life in this province.

"We don't have many homicides involving guns in Saskatchewan and certainly don't have many homicides involving handguns in Saskatchewan," said the NDP cabinet minister.

I'll tell you what: They try that shit here in the US and I'll be first to sign-up for the civil war that results.

But wait! Even the gun grabbers say it isn't the guns:

Police officers and law enforcement agents across Canada agree gun violence must be stopped. But those involved in the day-to-day fight are unconvinced the Liberals' proposed handgun ban will solve the problem.

It is, at best, a step in the right direction, said Dave Wilson, president of the Toronto Police Association.

[...]

"Gangs are highly motivated and handguns are easily concealed," said Wendy Cukier, a professor at Ryerson University and the president of the coalition for gun control. "There's been a lot of media attention that suggests there's suddenly an epidemic of gun violence when in fact it's a particular form of gun violence that has grown, while other kinds of gun violence have decreased quite dramatically."

She says tough federal laws have reduced firearms in Canadian homes, making it less likely they will be used to commit crimes of passion. But because handguns are mostly used by criminals, police say strict laws have been unable to stop their proliferation. Many cite the United Kingdom as an example: Following the shooting deaths of 16 children in a schoolyard massacre in 1996, Britain banned the sale of handguns. But five years after the ban, the number of crimes involving handguns doubled, from 2,636 in 1997 to 5,871 in 2002.

In otherwords, it's the gangs, stupid, not the guns themselves! But going after the gangs is, uh, dangerous, so let's just ban all handguns and the problem will take care of itself. Yeah, right.

IF as part of a handgun ban they also included in the law that (1) anyone caught with a handgun by the police will be killed with it on the spot, (2) the policeman who fires the shot will receive a cash reward, (3) the survivors of the deceased will be charged for his cleanup and funeral expenses, and (4) any plaintiff and all of his attorneys of record who file a lawsuit seeking damages against any party for an improper shooting under (1) above and lose that lawsuit will be killed on the spot, and IF the government did all of these things without fail in every case (including to politicians and children caught with handguns) for five years, THEN I might believe that the politicians are really interested in getting guns off the streets. Otherwise it's just a move by those in power to disarm the sheepdogs and deserves to be resisted with all available force. If the politicians who promote this sort of nonsense really believe it will reduce the incident of violence then they are too stupid to be allowed to vote, let alone hold office, and should be resisted with all available force.

Good thing I'm not a Canadian, 'cause I hear it's hard to get into the US these days.

We should welcome any provinces that wish to secede into the Union.

Except Quebec and Ontario. That's where the Frenchies and libs live.

Actually this seems eminently reasonable if you take the viewpoint of a Canadian Liberal Politician. Come on, we're talking about a corrupt, arrogant, abusive banana republic oligarchy that is facing the prospect of not holding power next year.

Say you're one of these goons and you see the likelihood that you'll be on the street, among the peasants and peons, without RCMP protection. Wouldn't you suddenly want to ensure you'd be entering an unarmed populace?

What we in the US need to do is dispatch Jimmy Carter to negotitate some sort of power sharing arrangement. Or maybe the Libs can pick up the lease on Arafat's Riviera villa.

I thought Canadians didn't have guns, that they were so much more enlightened and civilized than us....

I'm with you Jeff. And in light of the recent news I'm giving Canadians showing up a Boomershoot 2006 a rebate.

Posted by: Joe Huffman at December 10, 2005 04:35 PM

Steve: it's an election promise, so the Liberals are only going to enact it if they get reelected (which, of course, they will, because politics in Canada is a joke).

Posted by: Adam at December 10, 2005 10:45 PM

Adam, I agree that the Libs will probably stay in power. We are talking about Canada, of course.

But I am curious why the police get an exemption. If nobody has guns, then why should the cops?
