November Comfort Food

November is my least favorite month. The days keep getting shorter, the weather is cold, windy, sleety, and miserable. By December we have snow which makes everything look nicer and you can again tell where the road ends and the gullyies and fields begin -- you can spot the deer, too. And by December 21st the days start getting longer.

I am ashamed to admit that one of my favorite comfort foods at this time of year is Campbell's Condensed Soups. I just like them, even if that makes me sound like I'm 10-years-old. Don't give me any of that elitest Progresso crap. I want my Campbell's. My favorites are Bean with Bacon, Cream of Chicken, Tomato, and -- no, really -- Cream of Broccoli, which I sometimes supplement with frozen brocolli cuts mixed in. The tin cans make good plinking targets, too.

Tomato is best served with grilled cheese. Mmm...

I don’t mind the Campbell’s but here in Arizona November is one of my favorites. The air conditioner is off and the windows are opened. But the range is a lot more crowded than it was in July.

Oh yeah. I'm with you - the cream of broccoli with a little frozen broccoli added. Right on.

Bean with Bacon. Yum

Now I have to go to the store.

I'm with Zueswood, griled cheese dipped in the tomato soup is just about the best winter lunch there is.

No chicken noodle?

Seriously, you ain't had soup till you've had my Mom's Scotch Broth. So thick you can dance on it.

Jeff, I hope you know to crush up a good handful of ritz crackers in the tomato soup. Also, my father showed me how to mix in milk instead of water to make it soooo much richer. Jerry

My wife and i reall dig the tomato. I'm real big on split pea and ham - and the Claim Chowdha too.

I LOVE CAMPBELL's SOUP!!!

Just make sure you save the labels and give them to the local school district before heading off to plink.

When I was a kid I liked to toast an English muffin, spread Campbell's undiluted Bean with Bacon on it right from the can, top it with sharp Cheddar, and brown it under the broiler. Man, I thought I'd discovered ambrosia!

Comfort food? I'll give you comfort food.

1 potato, diced.
2-3 ribs celery, chopped, with all leaves.
1 onion, diced.
Salt and pepper

Simmer with barely enough water to cover until veggies are very soft. Abuse veggies with potato masher, a big spoon, a rock, a stick, or whatever you can find. Add enough whole milk or half and half to make up as many servings as you need, toss in a big gob of butter, reheat, adjust seasonings, and serve.

I like this because it takes less than 30 minutes including clean-up. Best served with hard, crusty rolls, more butter, and strong coffee.

This is a Lutheran recipe. If there isn't enough of something, add more. If there's too much, use less next time. You're a grown-up now, figure it out. If you want low fat, this ain't the stuff.

ah, bean with bacon. Just had a can of that for lunch today.

Posted by: ben at November 13, 2005 11:58 PM

that should really be "ahhh"

Posted by: ben at November 13, 2005 11:58 PM

Progresso's ad campaign worked beautifully.

I refuse to buy their stuff, ever again.

I usually get generic, since you need to doctor up the condensed stuff anyway (especially with broccolli, you've GOT to add some more to what they give you).

But that progresso "Grow up, men" bullshit.... Well, it certainly made an impression. (And too bad, they made the *only* chicken noodle that I liked).
