Liberal Loves Gun Rights

With a hat-tip to Cathy at 802 Online for pointing me to an article in Vermont Woman by Cindy Ellen Hill, author of the book Brady Denial? You CAN Get Your Guns Back. She participated in the Gun Rights Conference held in Los Angeles last September and writes about it here.

The commentary -- her impressions of it -- are interesting and of a personal nature. She's adamantly pro-2A and proud of it but she's also "liberal". She reconciles the two thusly:

I am nervous over more than the flight. Despite being a, well, let’s face it, ‘gun nut,’ I am for all intents and purposes a liberal. A union-supporting Irish Democrat of generations of union-supporting Irish Democrats, disgusted enough by the Clinton administration to throw in the towel on the Party and run with the Progressives. Pro-choice, environmental activist, anti-death penalty, civil libertarian… I grew up shooting. I believe strongly that all ten Amendments to the United States Constitution which comprise the Bill of Rights work together; that means the Second Amendment securing the right to keep and bear arms is there to enforce the other nine against governmental intrusion. This latter concept seems to be where I lose many of my liberal friends and somehow wind up as the darling of the right wing.

Read the whole thing.

I find it a lot easier to tolerate people of other political persuasions as long as they are not trying to deprive me of my basic human basic right to protect myself or my loved ones. How can I honestly share bread with someone who would rather that my daughter be strangled with her own underwear, than be able to have a fighting chance by carrying a gun?

Peace,
Individ

Is she the Cindy Hill environmental lawyer from Middlebury? If so, I worked with her on some water issues a few years back. Didn't know she was a gun nut though.

Good post and I generally agree with her on lots of points. Very well written.

Great stuff. The gun thing really does cut across the political/social/classes.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
