Ill: Uniform Firearms Transport Law in Works

From the Herald-Review:

SPRINGFIELD - A proposal making it easier for people to transport firearms passed the state Senate on Thursday despite an earlier Gov. Rod Blagojevich veto.

Proponents contend a person cannot possibly keep track of more than 100 different gun transport ordinances in Illinois and might unintentionally violate a law while crossing the state.

"If you're legally carrying your firearm where you live in the morning, you may find yourself in - Oak Park under a different law," said state Sen. Mike Jacobs, D-East Moline. "We need a standard uniform law that everybody understands."

The measure would wipe away any local ordinance for transporting weapons that is more stringent than the state's current law. The Illinois State Police require that weapons be unloaded, enclosed in a case and not immediately accessible.

This is just common sense legislation. You live in or want to visit Illinois to go hunting or to a range outing. Trying to figure out a route that will bypass towns with "no firearms" rules, or that prohibit firearms in your trunk is near impossible. Chicago comes to mind. This bill would rectify that. It's passed the Senate and goes to the House.

Correct me if this is wrong, but isn't this already federal law?

Or does the federal regulation only protect you when traveling between states, and not for intra-state travel?

Bill,
The FOPA only applies to interstate travel.
Jeff,
"You live in or want to visit Illinois to go hunting or to a range outing."

Why? Why in hell would any self respecting gun owner want to visit that Browning forsaken place, let alone live there?

The bill would be an improvement over the existing state of affairs in that piece of land bordered by America, but considering the sheer magnitude & viciousness of the rest of the gun contorl laws there it's less than putting a band aid on someone who was decapitated.

Did the article mention that possession of guns or ammo w/o an FOID is an arrestable offense? The ban on NFA items? The prohibition on carry outside the home be it concealed or open unless hunting, target shooting or the firearm is unloaded & locked up? I could check the article for myself but i just don't feel up for hearing more about that bloody place than I have to.

The only common sense legislation that should occur in that state is altering their RKBA provision to omit "...subject to the police power..." & then adjust (i.e. eliminate) all their gun control laws accordingly.

The only common sense action for gun owners is to avoid the damned place at all costs.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
