Another Gay Gun Nut Discovered...

From Yahoo/AP:

George Takei, who as helmsman Sulu steered the Starship Enterprise through three television seasons and six movies, has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.

[...]

"The world has changed from when I was a young teen feeling ashamed for being gay," he said. "The issue of gay marriage is now a political issue. That would have been unthinkable when I was young."

The 68-year-old actor said he and his partner, Brad Altman, have been together for 18 years.

Takei, a Japanese-American who lived in a U.S. internment camp from age 4 to 8, said he grew up feeling ashamed of his ethnicity and sexuality. He likened prejudice against gays to racial segregation.

Well, okay, I don't know that he likes guns but wasn't he the guy who fired the phasers and photon torpedoes on the Enterprise?

He did have control of the ship's artillery, didn't he?

(Bear with me; I'm desperately trying to figure a way to work 'cannon cocker' into a pun, here... ;) )

Was there ever even a question?

Didn't Chekov fire some of those things too?

His character, Mr. Sulu, was singled out as a handgun collector--as I recall, the episode was "Shore Leave," and the crew didn't realize the planet they were on was an alien amusement park, where their fantasies would be materialized from a subterranean manufacturing facility. All of a sudden, Kirk hears gunshots, and runs to find Sulu target practicing with (I believe) a .38 Police Special, which the Captain confiscates, and later uses to shoot an armored knight bearing down on Dr. McCoy.

Unfortunately, as with the new James Bond, we can't confuse characters with the actors who play them. I understand Takei has a strong socialist bent in his politics--don't know where he stands on guns, but if I had to bet...

Sulu also had swords a few times. But he was the navigator--Checkov was the ship's gunner.

Actually, Sulu was the helmsman and Chekhov was the navigator.

I kinda figured out he was gay, about 20 years ago.

About 18 years ago we put on a sketch at the MidSouthCon called Star Trek: The Liberal Generation. We played it so that every character was gay, except Sulu. That's way more ironic then a black fly in your chardonnay.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
