October 24, 2005Firearm Instant-Check Fees? There's a discussion (which I'm a part of) over at Say Uncle where it seems that in some states you actually have to pay the gun dealer a fee to have the NICS (Brady instant background check) run so you can purchase your firearm. I've never heard of such nonsense. Here in Vermont, I've bought a lot of guns from a lot of Vermont dealers over the years and no one has ever charged for the instant background check. I've also bought guns in New Hampshire and never paid a fee. Indeed, my non-resident NH CCW permit only cost $20 bucks and you KNOW they ran a check on me for the four-year permit. It's time you folks gave-up your better paying jobs (I admit it) and moved to Vermont (best) or NH (almost as good) and enjoyed your constitutional right to buy and own whatever the fuck you want. Heck, the next-door town owns and maintains a 300+ acre shooting range that costs only $10 dollars a year, payable to the local gun club. And they allow .50 cal weapons. Or machine guns. Or, as one local cop who I met there pointed out, explosives! Even in my own tiny (900 residents) town, the town cop lets folks shoot to their heart's content in the gravel pit next to his home. Yeah-yeah-yeah, it gets cold here. What are you, wimps? Your guns and gun rights, lack of traffic, open spaces, and did I mention gun-rights, will keep you warm at night... Plus we could use a few more conservatives around here. Comments
I've never had to pay a fee for the background check in either New Hampshire or Massachusetts. I wonder if the dealer eats the cost of the check in those states? Posted by: Yosemite Sam at October 24, 2005 05:24 PMYeah, that's all good but I couldn't get used to the funny accents. I'd have to keep telling myself "just because they talk like that doesn't mean they're dullards." Posted by: Benson at October 24, 2005 06:13 PMMachine guns, .50 cal and explosives? Sounds almost as good as Idaho. Let me know if you want me to put on a Boomershoot "next door" sometime. If you have the place and a few people to help out I can supply the rest. Posted by: Joe Huffman at October 24, 2005 06:59 PMWell, dealers charge $10 for the NICS, which is adminstered by the state. There's also a $0.001 tax on ammo. 100 rounds = 10 cent tax, in case I got the decimal wrong. Posted by: SayUncle at October 24, 2005 09:13 PMSayUncle was right on the TICS check fee, although the ammo tax here in TN is supposed to be $0.10/container, whether that container is a blister pack of Glasers or a case of Wolf, however you're more or less at the whim of the TWRA inspector's interpretation. As far as moving to VT/NH? The cold is bad enough, but in case you hadn't noticed, you're surrounded by yankees. All the gunbloggers in the world put together don't outnumber one weekend's worth of tax-dodging Massholes and summer-cottage-seeking Manhattanites. Put up a fence with guard towers along the NY and MA borders, and I'm on the next Greyhound. Posted by: Tam at October 25, 2005 08:24 AMJoe and Jeff, Count me in for help if there's a "Boomershoot East" event in VT or NH. Um...what Jay said. Posted by: Bruce at October 25, 2005 09:27 AMHere in Utah, there is a fee, but if you have a curren CCW, that is taken as proof, and a background check is not required; I know some people who have gotten CCW's for that fact alone, even though they don't really carry a firearm. Posted by: Robert Garrard at October 25, 2005 09:37 AMI am thinking of NH over VT, simply because VT has, essentially, no IT related jobs. Being mainframe guy, I need the kind of business climate available in southern NH. Plus taxes are lower. Though I like VT better, I also like having a job better than not. I am only waiting for two things: An elderly relative I help care for to pass on, and a little more gumption. But if the USSC takes a 2A case and rules in our favor, (HAH-hah-hee-hee!, I'm so funny...), that may change. I could deal with the high taxes if my rights started to be recognized. Posted by: tomWright at October 25, 2005 09:50 AMUh, what Jay G and Bruce said. And tomWright, there are plenty of IT jobs in Vermont. Posted by: countertop at October 25, 2005 10:49 AMCountertop: The concepts may be roughly the same, but the differences are major. I could not pass a tech interview on web based tech like Java, PHP or Windows if you pointed that BFG-50 at me, that Jeff is playing with lately. But I think we just thread-jacked. Posted by: tomWright at October 25, 2005 11:38 AM In PA, the fee seems to be $5.00 per firearm as a point of data. I don't know who mandates this fee but it seems to be standard. Where the money goes, I have no idea. -A Posted by: Andy at October 25, 2005 01:09 PMMy pistol club has it's own designated FFL. I buy my firearms and accessories through him at dealer cost. He only requests a tip to cover his time. No NICS fee either. Posted by: Mike Y at October 26, 2005 08:22 AMthe comment input form disappears. Your comments are welcome.
