Gun Rights in Wisconsin

Wow! A newspaper in Wisconsin actually comes out in favor of passing a bill to allow concealed-carry. From the Janesville Gazette:

We believe the legislation has merit for two key reasons.

First, we agree with Republican authors Rep. Scott Gunderson of Waterford and Sen. Dave Zien of Eau Claire that criminals would be less likely to attack or rob people if they knew some of them might have guns.

Second, Wisconsin's Constitution seemingly grants us the right to carry guns. In 1998, voters overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that states, "The people have the right to keep and bear arms for security, defense, hunting, recreation or any other lawful purpose."

If the editorial had stopped Right There, it would be perfect. Alas, it continues:

However, we object to a provision to keep permit holders secret. Zien and Gunderson said making that information public has led police in other states to unfairly target permit holders in criminal investigations. Speaking of rhetoric, Zien called those situations a "holocaust."

The public should have the right to know who has a permit, even if criminals also could get that information. A law officer stopping a car should be able to check on whether the owner has a permit.

First of all, I doubt very much that cops would NOT be able to find out if the guy they stop for a traffic infraction has a carry permit. Indeed, if nothing else, most states require and certainly it is common sense for someone to tell an officer that they are carrying. I'm sure when the cop does a DMV records check, the state could further provide information that someone is a permit holder.

Secondly, why does the public have "a right to know" what their neighbors have in their possession? Should they know that I have a condom in my wallet? An overdue electric bill? A pacemaker?

And yes, the criminals could also use that information to target NON-permit holders, increasing the risk of attack on those citizens who are not comfortable owning or carrying a firearm.

So half of the editorial is right, the other half wrong. Oh well, when a pig flies, you don't blame it for not staying up in the air too long...

Most of us who carry also own more than one gun. If my neighbors (not living in a great neighborhood) knew I carried, I would probably have a break-in within a week, thereby suppling the gangs with some evil assault weapons and automatic pistols (actually semi-auto, but I like sounding like a real reporter).

I found another article from Minnesota this morning that I think is fairly well-balanced.

In the state of Kentucky, a CCDW License is linked to your Driver's License. A LEO running your plates at a routine stop will know that the registered owner, if a resident, has a CCDW. Not a big issue for the law abiding.

I also have to agree that the criminal element could use the information for targeting of victims.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
