Pop Quiz!

If you saw, but didn't read too carefully the following:

WASHINGTON—The House of Representatives has approved a bill that would shield makers and sellers of ____ from lawsuits brought by people who claim the products caused...

You'd be thinking it referred to what is on all of our minds today, the firearm maker's shield bill. Wrong!!!

From Business Insurance:

WASHINGTON—The House of Representatives has approved a bill that would shield makers and sellers of food from lawsuits brought by people who claim the products caused obesity or other ailments.

The House passed the Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act—H.R. 554—on a 306-to-120 vote Wednesday. The measure would ban new claims and dismiss pending personal injury claims brought against food manufacturers, marketers, advertisers, distributors, sellers and trade associations alleging that consumption of food products caused weight-related health problems.

Claims alleging breach of contract unrelated to health problems, violations of applicable federal or state law and actions brought by federal regulatory agencies would be exempt from the liability shield.

The Senate has yet to vote on its version of the bill.

Sorry, Tubbo, you'll no longer be able to blame Burger King for your spare tire.

Incidentally, the article does give a brief mention to that other bill, too.

Could we be witnessing the start of tort reform in this country? Hmmm, not quickly enough:

Environmentalists sued the Navy on Wednesday, claiming that a widely used form of sonar for detecting enemy submarines disturbs and sometimes kills whales and dolphins.

The sonar "is capable of flooding thousands of square miles of ocean with dangerous levels of noise pollution," according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in Los Angeles.

We'll all be dead from enemy subs firing missiles at us but the whales will be spared...

For all I hear from environmentalists... I have never actually seen then link to any proof of this, at least anything more than maybe the occasional 1 per year or something...

But if that is the case then man, start rounding these puppies up and adding them to my canned tunafish!

The Key phrase is "capable of" - after sonar, next will be propellors, which are not only noisy but "capable of" inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
