Michigan to Honor 2nd Amendment

Here's a nifty idea as reported by the Detroit Free Press:

A plaque honoring the right to bear arms would be placed near the state Capitol under legislation approved Wednesday by the state House.

The House voted 108-0 to send the Senate a bill that would require the Michigan Capitol Park Commission to place the plaque near the Capitol or in the adjacent mall area. The plaque would be installed once enough private money is collected for a foundation to which it could be attached.

The plaque, which was created by the Iosco County-based gun rights group Brass Roots, is made of more than 18,000 empty shells collected at a 1994 rally at the Capitol. It measures 4 feet by 6 feet and is inscribed with the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment and a similar provision in the state constitution.

Rep. Leon Drolet, a Republican from Macomb County's Clinton Township who sponsored the bill, said the intent is for the monument to be funded completely with private dollars.

An amendment to the bill would also authorize placing plaques to honor some other parts of the Bill of Rights, such as the First Amendment.

Aside from reaffirming the Second Amendment, I think ideas such as this would be good near any state capital, or even the town offices of most cities. It's about time Americans were reminded that they have certain rights, that those rights are necessary, and that citizens need to be ever vigilant to prevent those rights from being eroded through the misguided actions of politicians and special interest groups.

As a Michigan resident, I am glad that our legislators are proclaiming their support for the Second Amendment. Now, if only they got their act together, and pass the "no-retreat" law. I wonder though, if our Democratic Governor, will sign this act. The Million Mom March and the Brady Campaign folks are putting a lot of pressure on her to veto this bill.

No... not for the citizens. See, I think that this plaque is excellent because it reminds the LEGISLATORS who is in charge, if they start to instill tyranny. It would be great if, above every courthouse, and above every capital building, we had the second amendment and a picture of an armed citizen. Make sure that they remember how this country was founded, and what might happen again, should they forget. Absolutely freaking brilliant, Michigan has it right, and it is hard saying that here in Texas... the state that makes concealed carry expensive. Oh well.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
