September 04, 2005Shop At Wal-MartI do. Always have since they usually have good prices on ammo. Anyway, on one of the "talking heads" shows this morning I heard that Wal-Mart had sent a convoy of trucks bearing water to New Orleans the day before Katrina hit and were planning to give it out free. Supposedly, officials turned them away. I can't verify that but I can direct you to Wal-Mart's website where they are donating a hell of a lot and setting up distribution centers in the ravaged areas to give out free supplies of essentials to victims. Here's what they're doing. I'll just quote a bit of it:
Gosh, what an evil company, huh? As I said, I've always bought ammo from them but now I intend to buy other things from them if they have them. I know they've done good in other communities as well and the cynical among you will just claim that they only do this to GET folks like me to shop there. Fine. It worked. I don't see 7-Eleven or Exxon or Saks Fifth Avenue doing anything. By the way, I hear that Target is doing good too, so shop there as well. Update 9/12: I take it back! See this post! To hell with Wal-Mart! Comments
Here's a long list of donating corporations from the guys at Moorewatch. Exxon is among them. http://moorewatch.com/index.php/weblog/those_eeeeevil_corporations/ Posted by: Alan at September 5, 2005 07:08 AMThats what I thought about Wal-Mart then I went back to buy some more stuff and low and behold they didnt have any guns all gone and the person behind the desk said that they were going to get rid of all gun stuff and that encluded ammano. I asked why and they told they decided not to carry that kind of merd in the store. Wal-Mart has good prices on whatever they have, though the selection is usually limited to 1 or 2 brands. Motor oil, small appliances (from fans to microwaves) and some staples are priced beyond belief at Wal-Mart. Take a look at Sam's Club. Prices on liquor are unbelievable (and in many places you don't have to be a member to buy the liquor), beer, soda, paper goods. You need space to store it, but the prices are incredible. (alas living on a boat I have no space...) They also have great prices on DVD players, TVs (including flat screens) and a whole lot of other stuff. The yearly savings on albacore tuna paid for my membership. The rest of the savings were just great. Posted by: Zendo Deb at September 5, 2005 09:24 AMDon't know, Mike, the Wal-Mart in West Leb (NH) has a nicely stocked rifle and ammo area so you might be right that it's just a local decision. Of course, in NH and Vermont you can buy ammo at lots of gas station/mini-marts... We're a little nutty that way around here. Posted by: Jeff Soyer at September 5, 2005 09:39 AMEvery Wal-Mart I've been to in NH has carried guns & ammo. None in MA do (that I am aware of). I'll buy ammo at Wal-Mart - you can't beat the price on 9mm, .22LR, and 12 ga. - but it'd be a cold day in hell before I ever bought a gun there. I meant to blog about the fact that the first Wal-Mart I ever set foot in, before they'd rudely intruded on New England, was in Slidell, LA. It's probably destroyed, by the sound of the damage in that town. Ironically, I was unimpressed because the particular store was messy and dirty, and reminded me of a poorly cleaned K-Mart. Since then I have learned that it varies from store to store, and the prices rock. When I got my first apartment, I bought housewares at yard sales and got some hand me downs. With Wal-Mart in particular, and cheaper manufacturing more generally, I'd now be able to buy new on the kind of money I made then. Maybe it changed, but I am pretty sure the Wal-Mart in Halifax, MA carried guns and ammo. My brother worked part time in that department for a while. Posted by: Jay at September 5, 2005 11:13 AMGood for Wal-mart! I have never shopped there very often, not because I think they're evil but because they aren't convenient to me, but I'll try to work my way over there more often.
