Larry Elder & Me

Talk show host Larry Elder is a firm supporter of the Second Amendment and has just released a movie on DVD titled, Michael & Me. That link (or click the image below) takes you to the Amazon listing. Here's the description from there:

michaelandme_photo1.gif

Michael Moore is a talented, provocative filmmaker, who challenged America's so-called gun culture in "Bowling For Columbine." Television and radio talk-show host Larry Elder tried-for a year-and-a-half-to interview Michael Moore. Larry wanted to ask him one basic question: "You tell us how many gun deaths there are in America, but how many Americans are alive because they were able to use a gun for self-defense?" Moore concludes that America has "too many guns." But does it? Larry made this film in an attempt to answer that question. Political pundits divide the country into blue states and red states. The red states feel alienated by the likes of liberal demagogues like Michael Moore. Many Americans own firearms, don't support additional gun control laws, live in one of some 34 states that allow citizens to carry concealed weapons, and support the Second Amendment. This film speaks to them. For these people, this film might be "The Passion"…of the Second Amendment.

I presume it's coming out quickly on DVD because unlike liberal, white Michael Moore's Bowling For Columbine, conservative, black Larry Elder's Michael & Me didn't fit in with the Hollywood agenda and didn't receive much in the way of distribution and promotion. I hadn't even heard of the movie until this morning when I stumbled across it in a Google search.

There's a column today by Mr. Elder in the Jewish World Review where he says about the movie:

"Michael & Me" asks why, if America possesses "too many guns," is the murder rate among Japanese Americans actually lower than in Japan? And why, in England, with severe gun restriction, is the English murder rate growing, and the violent crime rate — assaults, car thefts, hot burglaries — now exceeding ours?

As Moore did in his entertaining film "Roger & Me," I sought out the director — some might say "ambushed" — in order to ask him a few questions. (You'll have to see my film to find out what happens.)

My film interviews victims of crimes, those who protected themselves with firearms, gun owners, criminals, police officers, authors and academicians. Texas State Representative Susanna Hupp describes how she witnessed her mother and father executed by a gunman in a restaurant. The film also interviews Jane Doe, who, two days before she got raped, attempted to purchase a handgun — only to be thwarted by California's 10-day waiting period.

Some believe that the Second Amendment only confers a collective right — as part of a state militia — rather than an individual right to keep and bear arms. The film notes that the Founding Fathers clearly intended the Second Amendment to serve as a bulwark against possible tyranny by government. Why would the Founding Fathers limit the right to "keep and bear arms" to a government militia if threatened with tyranny by government?

Why indeed? There's plenty more so read the whole thing. He has a nice long list of quotes from various past leaders and constitutional lawyers as well; good stuff to use in banners on pro-gun sites. I was surprised by this one:

Alan Dershowitz said, "Foolish liberals who are trying to read the Second Amendment out of the Constitution by claiming that it's not an individual right or that it's too much of a safety hazard don't see the danger of the big picture. They're courting disaster by encouraging others to use the same means to eliminate portions of the Constitution they don't like."

I think it would be a swell idea if all of us who support the true meaning of the Second Amendment would purchase this DVD (it's only $14.99) and send a message to Hollywood liberals in control of the big studios. Imagine the notice it would get if it got high enough on "the charts"!

Of course, it woudn't hurt of you went to Amazon via the link at the bottom of this page to buy it, kicking a few pennies to a very worthwhile gun rights group here in Kennedy Country in the process.

I have argued this for years:
All too many of those that love the First Amendment, and of those that love the Second Amendment, each hate the other Amendment, and use that same tactics of distortions, lies and revisionist definitions to redefine and diminish the other.

How many times have you heard:
There is not 'wall of separation' in the Constitution
The Constitution GRANTS freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion
It is not an establishment if christianity in GENERAL is imposed, since it is not a specific CHURCH

Freedom of the press and speech, yes, but not freedom of the radio, TV or internet

Pornography is not speech, it's pictures

OR (as Jeff points out)
The Second Amendment mentions a militia, so it must only mean a government controlled, organized and equipped force, like the police, National Guard or Army.

They didn't have automatic or semi automatic weapons back then.

We don't need to hunt like that any more, besides, how many bear attacks have you heard about in NYC lately?

We are at peace with the Indians/Native-Americans/First-Peoples/whatever, we do not have to defend our towns from them any more.

etc, etc,...

The rest of us that understand that both the First and Second A. are EQUALLY important and both mean what they say, seem to get drowned out of the debate.

Larry Elder has a talk show during unemployment hours here in LA. One morning I tuned in thinking he would be delivering some sort of brash libertarian message on the airwaves, only to find that it's yet another sordid domestic problem-solver show.

Still, he's on our side, so I dig him. And I hear his radio show is good and vitriolic.

Scott
Nice try!

Larry Elder comes on at 3 pm and goes to 6 pm on KABC in Los Angeles.

He comments on political and news items with a STRONG message of conservative and "small (l) libertarian ideals.

His message of personal responsibility is hardly a "sordid domestic problem solver show"

To the rest I suggest giving him a listen. He has recently gone National and is on Satelite Radio. Read his columns on JWR. Form your own opinions.

I'm talking about his TV show, which airs at around 9AM. I've heard parts of the radio show, and it's exactly as you describe, but the TV show is a less-trashy Maury Povitch.

Scott,

Sorry. I never get to see his TV show, and I will have to take your word for that.

I just didn't want to see a "good guy" get trashed by a troll.

Once again I apologize for the misunderstanding.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
