Quote of the Day

Message on my answering machine yesterday evening:

"Hello, Jeff. This is Harry at the gun shop. That, uh, ...whatever the hell it is, is in..."

Hey, a small gun store in a rural area may not have seen the likes of this before:

Heh.

As I indicated a couple weeks ago, Mark Serbu of Serbu Firearms has kindly sent me a scoped BFG 50 Carbine. It's a loaner for me to evaluate and have some fun with. I'll be picking it up this evening and hope to give it (and myself) the first workout on Sunday. Needless to say, there will be plenty of reports and photos of mass destruction in the following weeks...

How'd you score that gig?

Posted by: SayUncle at August 19, 2005 11:48 AM

Jesus Freaking H. Crisp! That thing looks pretty bare bones to me. No buffer, not much muzzle brake, in-line design. I hope you have some kind of recoil shield to strap on. I wouldn't go near it without plugs AND muffs, shooting jacket, and flood insurance.
In fact, I'd hire a stunt-shooter. I'm not kidding Jeff, that damn thing could knock you straight!
Put me down as lighting a candle in front of my shooter shrine and praying to the gun-gods for your safe and intact return from the range!

Uncle: Actually, he had read my blog (I'd made some comments about him) and emailed me. We corresponded and he made the offer. Nifty, huh?

Robert: Gun Test magazine says the muzzle brake is effective and lessens the recoil to about that of a shotgun. The sound and shockwave I'm aware of... And yes, Gun Tests does recommend both plugs and muffs. I also have shatter-proof shop-glasses that fully enclose the eyes. I like new "sensations", heh.

Yowsa!!
I think a range report video is called for. I'm expecting a fire belch about 8 feet long.

In terms of recoil, I might recommend shooting standing up instead of from the bench. My short experience with a 450 Nitro Express is the basis for this advice. I'm not sure which end of that monster was more lethal.

Have fun, w0000t !!!

Don't put any scope on it that isn't really up to snuff. Most of the 50's I have see routinely kill BSAs, Simmons, brand -X, et. Let's hope he loans you one with a Leupold on it......someone ELSE'S Leupold.
Having taught the Barrett semi 50 cal for the army...I just have to say: They TELL you its like shooting a 12 gauge....but it's just NOT. (I'd start out from under the overhead roof as well, or you might be nailing tin back down. Those muzzle brakes kick out a lot of sideways energy. The ones we shot were like small grenade explosions going off at the barrel.

Posted by: robert at August 19, 2005 04:56 PM

A friend of mine has a .50 (don't remember the model). He also has a muzzle brake. We learned to remove all small objects from the bench, because the sideways blast will blow everything off that isn't heavy enough.

Boy are you lucky, or what?

Posted by: Nightgaunt at August 19, 2005 06:23 PM

Yup! I just got home with this monster. Mark sent it in a cool case, with a 4x14 scope. This is a big chunk of steel. I brought it back to the mill and I swear that everyone drooling over it had a, um, shall we say "tent"? This fucking gun is too cool! More soon...

If I say nice things about Serbu firearms, can I get one to test out too?????

Seriously, good job and I look forward to the range report. Oh, and see if you can score a video camera. Glenn Reynolds has been linking to video blogs at Knox News Sentinel and this seem to be the kind of thing that would certainly qualify. Heck, check with them, they might even host the video for you (if they don't I will).

[a la Cartman] Hate you guys...

(I'm KIDDING, Jeff)

Hey, think Mark will let you keep it until, oh, October 2nd???

Posted by: Jay G at August 20, 2005 01:05 AM

I notice that Serbu's site doesn't note the meaning of "BFG" in the name of the gun.

What?....

Posted by: SteveH at August 21, 2005 12:35 AM

I Think the meaning of BFG is pretty self-evident...

The bolt handle location seems somewhat awkward to me, you'd have to play gopher after each shot and loose your sight picture to operate it easily I'd think. Definitely not a "sniper friendly" configuration in my thinking, which would make it difficult to sell to military organizations. I'd be interested in your comments on this after shooting it a while.
